Mmm, I'm somewhat ambivalent. Remain unconvinced being an elite tactician is really much of a difference maker in international football. still will be nowhere to hide from that angle after the Southgate criticisms. 18 month contract suggests all sides go in knowing it's a marriage of convenience.

Maybe early for Carsley. His U21 work suggests there's a bit more there than the easy comparisons with Southgate.

Southgate's defensive style of play got England to the precipice of winning a trophy. The issue was getting over the final hurdle when it was said that England needed something extra. So in this respect maybe Tuchel was a good choice. My personal view is that England are over-rated and over-achieved under Southgate. They may have some good players in certain positions but in other positions they seemed weak. However under Tuchel we will get to see. Having fit players with energy to spare is also important. End of season many players seem to be carrying knocks and fatigue.

Peculiar situation with England's Nations League games in the next few days - Carsley naming an initial squad weakened by absences and bringing in a couple of surprising selections, and then having to make more changes with the withdrawing of 8 of the initial squad (noting some of those were a result of clear injuries in the round of games before the international break, but some seem to be because of broken fingernails).

Tuchel apparently having no involvement either in the squad selection or the training sessions - surely at least would make sense for him to be present and get to know the players as a group.

While the Nations Cup isn't really that important, it would be good to get back into the top group, so that we are playing semi-competitive games against the best teams rather than the likes of Greece or Republic of Ireland.
