Tom Voyce missing, believed dead, in Storm Darragh
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/dec/10/tom-voyce-presumed-dead-after-car-swept-away-river-northumberland-rugby-union
The former England rugby union international Tom Voyce, 43, is believed to have died after going into the River Aln in his car, Northumbria police have said.
The force said officers received a report on Sunday morning that Voyce, who played for clubs including Bath and Wasps, had not returned home after an evening with friends. Northumbria police said it is believed he attempted to cross Abberwick Ford in his car, which was then pulled along with the current of the river. The car has since been recovered but officers did not find Voyce and it is believed he was swept away while attempting to escape and has died.

Just read about this on BBC. Very sad indeed.

Ford's can be deceptively dangerous.
I cycle through one regularly when I ride out into Essex and it is normally a trickle but when the water is up it can be over 6 ft.
I often wondered the purpose of a measuring gauge as you go into it until I rode out there after a sudden storm and the trickle had become a torrent that would have swallowed any car. I had to detour to the bridge.
At night you just may not realise how deep the water has got and maybe reassured by having a big car.
It is very tragic when these things happen

Always remember him as part of that cracking Wasps side of the 2000s. Some team they had then. Lovely player to watch. Tragic news if true:(

I remember Tom Voyce, part of a good Wasps team and had a few games for England. Tragic if true, and hard to believe it happened in those circumstances.

Really awful news, I also remember him fondly from his time in a Wasps jersey. Was always a fun player to watch.
I really feel for his poor family, as someone who had a close family member go out for just a regular weekend outing and never make it home last year I've got an inkling of the particular hell they're currently going through and wouldn't wish it on anyone.
