Music after scores
I'm a bit bored and my Monday's really dragging, so I thought I'd ask you all what your opinions are on the playing of music every time someone scores a try - or even a penalty. I think it's completely unnecessary and often deeply annoying depending on what song they play. Surely the fact that your team has scored is enough?

Re: Music after scores
Think it's a bit pointless playing proper songs. Scotland play about 5 seconds of the proclaimers, what's that about. Might be better off having music like Saracens have.

I hate it with a passion. It's worse even than swallow diving whilst scoring a try in my book.

Re: Music after scores
I think it's an Americanisation of sport we have going on now - cheerleaders at events, music for everything, ridiculous outfits (see Wimbledon)...it is annoying. I remember watching a match when Ireland played New Zealand down there, and when the All Blacks came out of the tunnel they had some dramatic, operatic music, and for the Irish they had some daft Riverdance type ditty.

Re: Music after scores
I remember watching a Jeff game a few seasons back at Kingsholm and every time that Gloucester scored a try the home fans started booing.
I was a bit confused until the commentators said they were giving their opinion on the music being played after a try. If I remember correctly Gloucester scored about 5 tries so there was a lot of booing.
Don't know if they've dropped the music now.

Oh can I also add pop acts miming before a match as well? That's an American thing. It's not the bloody Superbowl!

Oasis being played at Twickenham, for about the last decade. Drives me mad.

I don't like music being played when someone scores, although I would be most upset if Scotland took to the pitch at Murrayfield without the lone piper playing highland cathedral, that would be a shame.

I think it was at Twickenham when every time a try was scored they played the chorus for Mambo number 5 (a try obviously being a 5-pointer). Probably why England didn't score that many trys in that period!

why do they do it?
I do like what they do in france, you know that trumpet thing, they also do that in the T20.

Presumably because they think they should.
Am I right in thinking that they don't play music after scores at the Stade de France?

Re: Music after scores
I always assumed that the music was an adoption of the American theme and used to cover up the lack of noise at poorly attended games. Note the Sarries abomination and there meagre attendance figures. I would much prefer the crowds reaction as it adds the intensity of the game. It really annoys me when they do it at Twickenham especially when Tigers are playing. Sarries got their awful song can't we have the crowd reaction and no music we prefer!
So glad it's not done at Welford Rd and good on the Glaws lot for stopping it at the Kingsholm. Considering the level of support Glaws get why would you try and block it out!?!

If you mean the bit that sounds like a Mexican trumpet and makes the crowd go "Whaaaay!" after it, yeah I like that too

Re: Music after scores
Not sure whether they play music after tries at Murrayfield, maybe this coming season we'll find out
Actually they used to let the players choose their own "try" music back in the early 00's. Ridiculous but you did used to get some odd selections, particularly from forwards (and Kenny Logan) who didn't expect to score.

I hate music being playerd after points are scored. I particularly detest the Saracens "song" and hate the trumpet thing that was started in RWC 2007, just so pointless. Also I really hate the people (usually NZ or Oz) who try and start Mexican waves when matches are taking place.
I think that's it all off my chest now. :-)

Allez not Whaay non?
Dragons tend to play The Fratelli's Chelsea Dagger. That's not too bad. Scotland used it after all their kicks in 2007, as I even danced along to it to warm up, because Murrayfield was freezing.

They play that trumpet music at Leinster games after a succesful kick. Which I like.
But they play Chelsea Dagger after every try too, for a team like Leinster, that's just too much Chelsea Dagger!

I think music can add to the atmosphere sometimes. Granted sometimes it isn't needed. They tend to play music a lot at New Zealands grounds (whether they're scoring tries or not) and all the fans sing along; I've seen it a few times and thought "I'd give a lot to be there right now singing and drinking with the Kiwi's."

Nothing could ever, possibly be more awful than the "do doo do doo doo" song they play at Twickenham when England score. Nothing.

Music isn't a bad thing in rugby, it works with the crowd, the atmosphere, the whole event and exhibition that a rugby match is. It's just a shame that those in power choose to play mind numbing autotuned chart Poopie that sounds like Optimus Prime reaching climax. It's the choice of music that's the problem really.

On a similar topic, does anyone know how much those flamethrowers are that they use at the Millennium Stadium? They really are unnecessary.

I think that is great when it is just after the conversion and everyone is running back over the halfway line.

Between the flame throwers, confetti canons and water fountains behind the goals, I thought the heineken cup final was taking place in Disneyworld.

Lucky - they came in handy on a cold November evening when I was there though!
Years ago at the Liberty whenever an O's player kicked a conversion or penalty they used to play an exerpt of a song going "It's ooooooveeeeeer" thankfully they stopped that.

Ha, I'm not miserable at all, I just don't see how the fireworks or the music add anything to a game of rugby. Both cost money that needn't be spent.

Nottins, it's that dreaded word 'razzmatazz.' You have it in American football where they're trying to make up for the fact that the game itself isn't much of a spectacle, but rugby doesn't need it.

Re: Music after scores
I'm a firm believer that the crowd should lead any and all celebrations. It's an organic thing. The trumpets at French matches feels like it's a natural evolution, a crowd thing. But blaring out music has all the hallmarks of a marketing department. Leading cheers via the PA or pom-poms is not part of rugbys culture.

Re: Music after scores
Lucky I have to disagree about music and fireworks displays at the end of a match. At the Heino Final this year, the after match celebrations were brilliant, all part of the show and as a spectator I felt more involved than if there had been no celebrations.

Yeah, the after-match celebrations were okay I suppose...
I'm talking specifically about music after someone's scored and the fireworks when Wales take the field. If we had a better record the fireworks might be appropriate, but considering our recent form they seem quite ironic!

Lucky - The pyrotechnics aren't bad when the Welsh team come out. They don't last long, and considering SWALEC sponsor Welsh rugby, they should provide the flame gas for nothing

Again Luckless I agree with you. At the end of the game fine, when it's a celebration at the end of the HEC final, which would have been done for either side,. but the music after scoring and fireworks/flames are only done for the home side.

I hadn't thought about that, Nottins - you're probably right. They wouldn't want to waste money on the visitors though. Just on the home team...

nottins - yes the pre-match pyrotechnics and things are done by the home sides usually, but surely that's part of the entertainment for the spectators? Like in Scotland they have the pipe bands and their lights show at Murrayfield, which the crowd find exciting. They also did some sort of Braveheart act for the Calcutta Cup once.

Got to say I have never been a fan of the fireworks and other ENTERTAINMENT before the Scotland games. I am all for the band for the anthems but the rest just seems unnecessary, especially the couple of times you could hardly see the start of the game for the smoke caused.

I'm not a fan of choirs singing before international matches at the Millinnium Stadium. It's counter-productive. If a band played, as used to happen, the crowd would sing; but with a choir the singing's being done for them.
At least they've ditched the solo singer singing the anthem. I hated that.

I think the world agrees that the playing of Tom Hark at Twickenham is one of the most grating things you could ever witness, along with that annoying hand pumping dance that makes the entire crowd look like a bunch of geriatrics in a care home getting their daily circulatory therapy.

The choir singing before the recent Baabaa's game was ridiculous. Particularly the medley they did which included all songs related to other countries round the world. Fair enough the opposition were different nationalities, but the point of the choir is surely to warm up the crowd. Why would a predominately Welsh crowd want to hear a choir sing songs like Fields of Athenry or especially Swing Low, Sweet Chariot?

Of course they're done by the home side, but only FOR the home side. How do you know the crowd find it exciting ? Yes, the Braveheart thing was done, thankfully I missed that as I was still outside the stadium. Yes, have a pipe band as pre match entertainment, but let's not have a pyrotechnic and light show after the opposition are on the pitch and before the home side appears.

Nottins - How do I know the crowd finds it exciting? I think it's quite easy to gauge the general reaction of a crowd by the noise they make and if you're there in person, the general mood of the place about you. Of course I'm not speaking for every single individual because no one can, but generally the crowd as a whole, seem to enjoy some build up. I think some crowds even expect a bit of pre-match theatrics nowadays in some form.
