England of '05, or England of '11?
I was just browsing the BBC sport website when I came across this rather interesting article.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tomfordyce/2011/08/2005_vs_2011_composite_england.html
So the point of my article is, who would be your XI?
An interesting one, and I will post mine later.
Cheers

Very strange selection by Fordyce IMO. If he's picking players based on form in '05 or '11 how can he pick Vaughan but not Bell?
If he's picking based on form in respective series against Oz and India (as he appears to be), how can he pick Cook, (and again how can he leave out Bell)?
Personally, based on performance in the '05 Ashes and SO FAR in this series, I'd go:
Tresco
Strauss (05 version)
Vaughan (JUST, ahead of Trott) (c)
KP (either version)
Bell (need to ask which version?)
Prior(wk)
Flintoff
Broad
Bresnan
Swann
Jones
Of course, it's a bit early in the series to give definitive choices for the '11 bunch, but that's what I'd go for so far.

Probably...
Trescothick
Cook
Vaughan (c)
KP
Bell
Prior
Flintoff
Swann
Tremlett
Anderson
Jones
Flintoff was so good in that '05 series that there is no way I could leave him out, Tremlett is like a better version of Harmison and Anderson now is better than Hoggy was back then. Swann is obviously better than Giles was. The Cook selection is based on his form over the last year and obviously not this current series.

Re: England of '05, or England of '11?
Sorry guys, had to rush out earlier.
I have offered a slight explanation for each of my picks where I felt it necessary, to try and qualify them a little. My eleven (and this is a very tough choice) would be:
Trescothick
Strauss - I have omitted Cook due to his frailties against the swinging ball. He has improved a lot lately, but is still susceptible.
Vaughan (c)
Pietersen
Bell - '11 version, obviously.
Flintoff
Prior
Swann
Jones
Anderson
Harmison
Felt bad leaving Trott out, however I feel Vaughan's captaincy is necessary.

Re: England of '05, or England of '11?
considering the 2 major series performances from England came on the back of sustained good performance over a decent time period, I would take into consideration of that time period, rather than just the concerned serieses.
Trescothick
Strauss.
Trott
KP.
Bell.
Flintoff!.
Prior.
Swann.

Cook over Tresco, because, well, a double century against a full Aus bowling attack (minus McGrath) at the tender age of 20? Also, 18 centuries to Tresco's 14.. Says it all.
Edit: only had 10, completely forgot about Swann.

Agree fully with your side would have Prior ahead of Freddie though
Re: England of '05, or England of '11?
they just seemed to work in those positions though which is why i would keep it, i suppose Fred has Jones behind him, but Fred did well at 6 and Prior does well at 7.. also does well with the tail with him
but yeah fair enough

Re: England of '05, or England of '11?
1.Tres, starts an inning with an almighty wallop
2. Cook, real tough decision, but Cook just edged Strauss out.
3. Vaughan (c), by far the better captain for me
4. KP, easiest pick for obvious reasons
5. Bell, '11 version is a classy classy player
6. Prior, goes slighty against the ethos of the '11 side's 6 batsman policy, but feel he is good enough, and has plenty of batting in after him.
7. Freddie, he's Freddie, nuff said
8. Broad, showing signs of becoming the player we know he can be
9. Swann, 2nd easiest pick.
10. Anderson, very very tempted to pick Tremlett, but at the moment jst gave the nod to Jimmy.
11. Jones, who needs a new ball with this fella about, again Tremlett unlucky to miss out.

Trescothick, never really got the chance to show what he could do at international level, but proves at Somerset that he is a more than capable captain

In 09 Prior batted above Freddie the reason why I would have Prior ahead of him

I'd take this side except putting Freddie at 6 is a joke when Prior averages 45 in tests and plays like a batsman rather than a slogger. Jones versus Bresnan/Tremlett is tough ...with two fast bouncy bowlers already I guess the skiddy Jones gets it for variation. There could be an argument for taking Bresnan ahead of Broad even.
But I dont think theres an arguemnt against that batting lineup, the spinner and the keeper plus the concept of a fit freddie to give the extra bowling option thas keeping this current England side form being flawless. (By flawless I mean having no clear weakness, all the players in all the psotions could of course be better at everything)
