Sam Langford.. A born loser.

First topic message reminder :

Sorry if i might upset one or two pretentious guys on here, but Sam Langford was a born loser.
He was called the Greatest fighter nobody knew... and why?? he was an embarrasment to the sport...
He ended up blind and still fighting so please he was the Gary Glitter of Boxing (i know different crime)
maybe Barrymore.. Langford was A LOSER..
I am a big Boxing fan, however people do tend to wear rose tinted glasses when Langford is mentioned.

"Talking tosh"..I've heard that expression......

Clearly 99.9% of the World don't know Ali is the greatest. Go find any list by any historian or respected boxing analyst/pundit or writer and most list SRR as the greatest some don't even have Ali top 5. Your right it's all about opinions pity yours are utter nonsense.

Ali gave the name to himself but has stated that SRR was in fact the greatest. SRR was Ali's idol and the man he based his style on. Bert Sugar for one never listed Ali as his greatest neither did Ali's own trainer Angelo Dundee.

Sam Langford a loser? haha, give me a break... the guy fought from Lightweight to Heavyweight with a decent record. He was 5 foot nothing and fought heavies.

Lovely to have you on the boards Josh - you might want to have a look at cyberboxingzone. They've an excellent section on the "old-timers" which will explain why Langford was not, in fact a born loser - but rather a consensus p4p fighter of all time.

He won the Mexcian HW championship whilst blind. In fact, the last years of his career - he was blind. Yet was still KOing HWs whilst only weighing in at 175. Impressive, surely?

Anyway. Have a look at coxscorner and cyberboxingzone - and then I'd love to know if you still hold those "unusual" opinions.

The whole blind thing is pretty much irrelevant anyway it simply means Sam is a fighter who carried on too long, and on that respect he is not in the most exclusive of club. Ali, Robinson, Hearns, Leonard, Charles as well as countless others are all fully paid up members.

Fighters should be assessed at their best and at his best Sam was a true phenomena, lost something like two in 51 fights, both avenged, regularly mixed with quality operators such as Jeannette and Mcvea who both outweighed him and beat them on a consistent basis. Couple that with creditable early career performances against greats such as Gans and Walcott and whichever way you want to look at it Sam is the dictionary definition of the term all time great.

Frazier blind in 1 eye, cut in the other. Marciano bleeding awfully - practically blind. Leonard woeful eyesight in 1 eye.

The point is you wouldn't expect Langford to win. That's why the wins were such an incredible achievment.

PS. 1 of the guys he beat whilst blind was Tiger Flowers.

That's the same Tiger Flowers who beat Greb and Mickey Walker to become MW champion of the world.

I know you often feel that old-timers are allowed too much lee-way on their opponents - but this isn't one of those times.

I am far from being Langfords biggest fan and do feel he's a tad over rated, I for instance feel he falls some way short of Fitzsimmons level of greatness while many others have it the other way, needless to say I still have him in my top 15 of all time so is beyond any stretch a great fighter.

What an absolutely steaming sack of festering vomit the opening post on this thread is.
To be honest Josh in all my years on different boxing forums i cant honestly say you are a standout for your total lack of knowledge in this fantastic sport.
As the say goes "better to remain silent and appear stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".
