Mindset: Attacking

We welcome the challenge of FC Porto and have decided to set up with and attacking formation and hope to exploit them through the channels.

Freidel: Command his box, take the initiative and dominate his area. Look for the wings on goal kicks.

Whittaker & Baines: Encouraged to attack, looking to link with the wingers to get into overlapping postions. Be wary of the threat that Porto possess attacking wise and don’t dive in, stay tight and don’t let them get a run at you.

Dawson & Gallas: Look to dominate at set pieces but keep a good solid line with constant communication with your full backs. Look to keep the ball on the deck when playing out from the back. Dawson and Gallas to go up for corners.

Diarra: Roam in front of the defence, burst forward providing Parker covers, do not allow the Porto attack to break in numbers. Spread the play to the wings and sit in the centre when need to allow Parker to join the attacks. Hit their midfield hard in the tackle. Let them know you’re about.

Eriksen & Jovetic: Hog the touchline, make them play out wide and don’t be afraid to run at players, switch when necessary if you get more success cutting in. Look for good build up play and get the ball in the box. Cause problems. Don’t be afraid to have a go.

Parker: The link between defence and attack at all times. Read the game well and where required, sit in to assist Lass in defence, keep control in the middle of the park and dictate the pace of the game to suit Eriksen and Jovetic.

Podolski: Point to prove, go out there and show us the player that turns up for world cups. Keep your head, don’t make rash decisions and listen to the captain. Test the keeper with power shots early and look to bring Adebayor in to the shorter game, swap with Stefan where you feel you can cause problems.

Adebayor: Target man. Make yourself seen and get about their centre backs. Look for the neat passes to bring the wingers in but don’t neglect your defensive duties. Sit back on corners and let Lukas and Stefan sit up.

Free Kicks: Where the chance is there, go for goal. Everything else, look for the CB’s. Lass to sit on the centre circle and watch for breaks.

Corners: Mix it up short and long, looking for Dawson and Gallas on longer ones.
