Two US gp's from 2013 Empty Two US gp's from 2013

Post by Fernando Sat 22 Oct 2011, 3:10 pm

Formula 1 is set to have two grands prix in the United States from 2013, with plans for a race around the streets of New Jersey expected to be confirmed as early as next week.

Although F1 is returning to the US for the first time next year with an event in Austin, Texas, Bernie Ecclestone has made no secret of the fact that he would like another event in the country - with his preferred location being New York.

Ecclestone told AUTOSPORT last year: "It's happening. We are talking to them and trying to do our best. Let's see what happens."

High level sources have revealed that the plans have now reached fruition, and an announcement is expected to be made by New Jersey governor Chris Christie and other local politicians next week.

It is understood that the New Jersey GP will take place in June 2013, so it can be a back-to-back race with Canada, which will then leave the Austin event to keep its place at the tail end of the schedule to tie up with the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Last year, the Mayors of Weehawken and West New York revealed that they were in the preliminary stages of talks with a group of investors, led by former YES TV Network executive Leo Hindery Jr, to hold a grand prix in the area from as early as 2013.

It is not confirmed where the track will be, but it is likely to run along the banks of the Hudson River - using the waterfront and the iconic Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that a press conference has been scheduled at Port Imperial in Weehawken for next Tuesday, where an announcement could be made.

Seriously it's about time. F1 is desperately in need of new, exciting tracks that can replace existing ones such as Valencia & Bahrain etc.

Is Valencia the one currently running as the "European Grand Prix"? If so, get rid of it. It's by far the most dire race of the year.

No Bahrain is the most dire of the year. Valencia isnt THAT bad, but its certainly not in my top ten.

I hope Indianapolis isnt brought back, that was a dull track too.

Not a big fan of street circuits to be honest, so I can't say I'm thrilled at the prospect of yet another one, be it in New York or anywhere else.

Hope they've made a decent job of the Austin circuit though, in terms of making a good racing spectacle.

No neither am I. They only need 2 (max 3) a season. They tend to be a bit of a procession towards the finishing line.

Regarding the New Jersey race - ''they compare it to Spa but it will have the feel of Monaco'' said the West New York attorney Joe DeMarco

Worries me when things are said like this.

It'll be an absolutely awesome place to stage a grand prix, with the setting and landscape of NYC but unfortunately it'll probably end up like a typical boring street circuit. F1 should be about track circuits (except Monaco). They don't race normal street cars on tracks so why should they race F1 cars on roads?

Just seen the Google Street View running down JFK Boulevard E and I agree it's a shocker. The proposed course is 'to put it simply' long straights from one end of the course to the other to please American fans. The Manhattan backdrop is a considerable distance in the background and on the other side of the river, it's hardly a spectacular environment to race, unlike Singapore or Monaco.

haha i love how that video posted above by fernando shows the skyscrapers and tall buildings so dominantly as if the city is completely on top of the race track, the reality is somewhat significantly different + tht track is entirely straights, resulting in race being decided through pit strategy in my view

The Glasgow Grand Prix!! (Or maybe not...)

I look forward to it. Normally I'd say two gp's in the same country is wrong, but such is the size of the USA I think it will work well.
