2023 RWC for USA?

Link is to a story saying that USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville says that USA has been asked to bid for 2023 RWC - doesn't say by whom

Any views out there on whether the yanks should get the RWC - they had the soccer world cup in 1994 and it went ok although a lot of fans complained about the distances they had to travel. I remember the Irish soccer team's last group game then was in Boston and the next was 2,000 miles away in Orlando.

Money will no doubt talk at the end of the day, but I'd have big reservations about a RWC in the USA - not least thousands of rugby fans having to cope with their ultra-charming "homeland security" rentacops at the airports, bus and train stations.

I'd prefer Russia to get it :/

If rugby becomes more popular in USA in the next 12 years then why not?

They could have a good rugby side if they just tap into a tiny segment of the American football players there.

Whenever I think of American rugby I think of Jarvis from BBC's last man standing. Not necessarily a good thing!

I think it is a market open to exploitation by rugby. Could be a good money spinner and they have the infastructure and stadiums to suit the needs of an RWC. Only issue would be the time zones.

Would like to see the RWC held in Japan first and maybe one in Eastern Europe.

Russia should get a world cup but seening as the 2019 is in Japan the 2023 will probably go to France or OZ, I wouldn't might if Ireland got it really if the economic situation picks up a bit, maybe a game or two in Wales or Scotland and a couple of redovelopments at Connachts group and maybe Thurles.

I think it should go to SA in 2023, they've got the brand new stadiums and it would be a guaranteed financial success. The IRB would need compensation after Japan in 2019. In fact 2011 probably should have gone to SA, but then we probably wouldn't have seen a allblack win would we

South Africa is a good shout actually I forgot about them, in fact it would probably be the best place for it, the reason it didn't go there in 2011 was because the football world cup would have overshadowed it hugely, the IRB made the right choice

I agree that is should go to South Africa in 2023 as it should be back in the Southern Hemisphere. I do think Ireland deserve to host one Irish Curry but even with Wales and Scotland chipping in I can't see the IRB thinking they are big enough to stage it (based on the rational that NZ were only awarded this last tournament as the world game is getting too big).

Although living in Canada it would be nice to have it here in North America I don't think the support currently warrants it. You can't even really argue that it could massively boost the games popularity here - just look at when the Wendyball World Cup was held in the US. Yes grounds were full but they said that in 10 years the US national league would be one of the biggest in the world, attracting some of the biggest players in the game. As it was, other than a few players moving into the twilight of their careers they managed one true superstar who only came here because his parental guardian wanted to rub her skinny little miserable shoulders with the Hollywood A-listers.

I think that is the only way these leagues can grow like the Japanese league, a mix of older players and japanese players, it can only get better. I think in the end Canada and the US can host a world cup together with each group based a a certain location/time zone or what ever. It will happen at son stage but not anytime soon, we are talking 20 years down the line here.

For Ireland hosting the English and French fans would have less to travel as would fans of Italy and the smaller nations in Europe, the games would be almost always full if people would have money to spend with hopefully they would by then, we have a wide range of stadia from rugby, GAA and soccer (less so) to use plus Murrayfield and one or two in Wales. Maybe a few stadiums that would new redoing but nothing to big. Fans would pick it up quickly too, I for one would go to all the matchs in Cork if their were any.

I like the idea of a RWC in the US/Canada. The plan i read included both countries as involved. The good part is the stadia exist. And most are 80,000+ seaters. The Americans can market mud to a pig. So I think it would be the biggest Rugby party in history. and would make massive $$$ for all involved. And would probably the kick in the rear which American Rugby needs to grow faster. Great infrastructure, great buuildings, plenty of hotels, big profits. What's not to like? Time zones are better than in Aus or NZ, too.

Let's see how the Las Vegas 7s continues to do over there. If it continues to grow and grow as it is doing then yeah. A party in Florida/LA while seeing some rugby/ any other American sport sounds tempting!

Sorry Irish Curry but I don't see Ireland having the required infastructure to host a RWC. NZ struggled and I think it would be another case of the country making sacrifices in order to stage the event which Ireland probabley won't be able to afford for another 50 years (unless there's a mircale boom that rescues the Euro and allows them to pay their debts).

Only way it might work is if they host a joint RWC with Wales and Scotland but the chance of them organising that across three RFU's and four countries would be one hell of a challenge.

2015 England (confirmed)
2019 Japan (confirmed)

IMO 2023 South Africa makes sense followed by 2027 Italy. After that who knows.

Required infastructure/safety plans in place? It's not just great stadiums and home fans you need it's also the roads/hotel/restaurants/security services that are required to welcome people from all over the world.

Not overlooked. Just don't see it being capable of hosting one yet like Russia or USA.

It cant be all bad they eat lots of beef,but I must admit their playing surfaces are pretty ordinary.

2023 has be almost guaranteed to bring in a tasty profit. So it can only really be an established rugby nation.

After that Russia or USA, Argentina, Italy maybe...

USA should get it but each group should be centralised within a region a couple of States, preferably those with sporting rivalries and good NFL followings that will ensure a crossover of people wanting to watch this sport and get behind their adopted country
