Golf bans Empty Golf bans

Post by Doon the Water Thu 08 Dec 2011, 4:36 pm

I have issued a few in my time, a couple to some pretty famous golfers.

I am totally convinced that they don't work.
Have you guys any experience about members being banned?

Sorry folks but this post has been spirited away to this site as war seems to have broken out on the golf site and regular posters were being blocked.
I seem to be one of them.....can't for the life of me understand why.

Yes, we've had a guy at our place who has been banned a few times for totally losing it. Usually as a result of something that's happened in a comp which he didn't agree with. At all other times he's one of the nicest guys you could wish to meet. I don't think it's happened for a while, so maybe he has learned to button it now!

Doon, out of interest what were bans for and how long. Also why do you think they didn't work. Nice to read an actual golf post.

One lengthy one was for a low handicap junior hitting a ball over a motorway for a dare.

Funniest one was a short clubhouse ban to a couple of of juniors who became future international golfers. They thought it would be funny to unscrew all the salt and pepper pot tops so that they just lay on the top of the base. This resulted in a very oversalted or spiced meal for a few customers.

Mainly though it was club throwing, deliberate/accidental damage to the course etc.

I quite likethat. If on tv on some show they'd get paid for pulling off that trick.

I have stood before the committee, and made complaints against 2 members, who are notoriously slow, no one will play with them, and when they get on the golf course and you get behind them you are looking at a 5+ hour round.

After the committee heard my complaint, I was asked to wait in the bar, after about an hour the committee came out of the committee room walked straight past me and went to the bar, and started laughing and joking with the 2 guys I had complaint about, that's when I decided to change golf clubs, and its the best move I ever made

Doon - in my club when I was a youth there was a guy a few years older who, was a decent golfer, but was also notorious for cheating. I had reported him twice, the 2nd time I caught him I was playing with him in a 2ball junion club comp, after 4th hole, 5th teebox back at clubhouse, I walked off the course handed his card to the organiser saying I refused to mark the scores he was giving me. A few others reported him. He also got caught stealing golf balls out of some lockers (the old metal kind that could be prised open before our clubhouse refurb) and he was suspended for a few months later. The following year he was reported again for cheating and was banned for 2/3 years (can't remember which) and he left the club to move to another not too far away, porbably about 18 years old at the time. I have since played with him in a scratch cup, and a few of my friends in the other club play with him from time to time. He is a fabulous golfer, plays off +1 and by all accounts this is legitimate and has amended his old ways. It's a shame he ever had to resort to cheating when he was clearly a talented guy.

I remember when I was a junior we had a guy at our club who was very good, scratch or thereabouts. He got a lifeltime ban from the club after using his magic pencil to alter his score by 1 in the club championship.
