Why was the word "climax" (or properly klimax [clue]) associated with boxing - and what happened?

I read this, somewhere, and although my memory won't avail me of the finer points I'm pretty sure that we're back to the ancient Greeks.

The gist of it, I believe, is that if a fight was going nowhere in determining a winner, the fighters would each take turns to land x number of blows on the other, who would not defend himself. The procedure was called a klimax.

I have no idea how many such blows were permitted, or when the klimax would occur, or how it was determined who would kick things off.
