I think a lot of people get annoyed about smoking because it costs a huge amount for the NHS, which is paid for by the tax payer, and it's estimated that the cost to NHS outweighs the amount the government makes on taxing cigarettes.

It's your own choice, far enough, but surely you can see that the money is better spent elsewhere?

Of course it is, I agree with your point even though i am a smoker myself, It just gets me mad when the Doc's tell you to stop just because they say so.

But if we all stopped smoking they would have to put tax on some think else as they get a lot of tax from smokers.

Yeah, I know they get a lot of tax of smokers, but the cost to the NHS (paid for by tax) from smoking related problems is supposed to be higher than the tax they get from cigarettes being sold.

But surly it's our choice to smoke, From the price of a packet that it was from when i started smoking to what it is now they must be more tax now than what the Nhs has to pay for related smoking problems.

You'd have thought so, but seems not Blade. It is your choice to smoke yes, although the question has to be asked as to whether the cost to the NHS is worth your lack of stress.

I think Beer's case is obviously an exception, but the majority of people who smoke won't have a condition like that.

Problem is, the vast amount of people who smoke dont actually understand the effect it has on your body, and likewise when you quit. Giving up smoking generally leads to a chest infection, or at best a bad cough. Because your body begins breaking down the tar on your lungs it's effectively like having a new lung put in, thus making it more succeptable to infection. But it's easily treated with cough mixture and paracetomol, yet people run to the doctors begging for antibiotics and then end up smoking again.

I am a prime example of why we should not smoke, I have got asthma due to smoking and have to have an inhaler every morning.
I know you shouldn't smoke but don't want to give up.

The 'C' word stigma causes the most problems. To me, if you're numbers up then it's up. My Nan smoked near on 20 a day for 60 years, played 18 holes of golf a week up until she turned 84 and has never really been ill, yet my Aunty was t-total all her life except a sherry at Christmas and she died of liver failure.

Let people smoke, in fact raise the tar levels and thin the out of control population.

The tax from Ciggies helps keep the cost of living down for the rest of us. Its their choice, in the same way its our choice to walk into a pub or bookies - each as potentially harmful as smoking.

Just dont smoke next to me - go to that little pig pen outside the pub if you want to do it.

Dunno if it's different up in Glasgow but in most places you have to smoke in the pig pen.

most pubs and resturants here have an outdoor smoking place, ussually with an under cover porchy sort of thing

Ah see, that i don't agree with. There are 3 smokers in my house and nobody smokes indoors. I never smoke around Mrs B's children, nor does she.

Or when the same parents complain and moan that they cannot afford to give the kid healthy food instead of turkey swizzlers but somehow scrape together £100 a week if they both smoke a pack of 20 a day.
