Carnera would've reigned supreme today.
History has not been kind to Primo Carnera.
We constantly hear many describe him as a manufactured champion and imply that he only became champion as a result of his mob conections. He earned his shot at the title fair and square by defeating Art Lasky, King Levinsky and Earnie Schaff all of who were ranked in the top five at or around this time. It is almost certain that these fights were on the level and there is no suggestion even by Carneras most vheament critics that these fights were fixed.
Then yet many who argue the case for larger fighters being superior, attack the likes of Jess Willard and Primo Carnera more viciously than the smaller all time greats who their modern superheavyweights are matched against in fantasy fights.
In theory they logically have to because they lost to smaller heavyweights, providing the strongest counterargument against their position. Therfore they have to be reduced in terms of their stature, and the further the better. It is not enough just to make them weaker lineal champions, or fighters with technical limitations. They have to be made into farmhands or circus strongmen, who somehow stumbled into a boxing ring.
This has resulted in some serious nonsense being perpetrated and going largley unchallenged. These guys were not all time greats, but they had size athleticism, and frankly the king of skill set that alows the current crop of superheavyweights to be sucessfull. In my mind they would undoubtedly have had sucess in todays heavyweight division.
As good as if not better than the Klits

Not sure I would really agree. Willard for instance is in the Hall of Fame which, even in its increasinging laxity, is pretty decent recognition for a fighter.
Carnera almost certainly beneffited considerably from his mob connections and the odd fight not on the level - although it has to be said he was accused of both winning and losing fights that were fixes so it wasnt neccessarily one way traffic.
Given that Valuev was champion, and ended up with only a couple of losss its easy to imagine that Willard or Carnera would be contenders today or beltholders but I would have them both a level below the Klitschkos.

Not convinced he reigns supreme but have long argued Carnera is better than he gets credit for, anyone who can outbox Loughran is not without talent and to the best of my knowledge that fight was very much on the level. However am not convinced he is any better than either brother , certainly think Carnera holds his own in this era and outside of Wlad and Vitali would make him a pretty strong favourite against most everyone else in the division, not sure if that says more about the current heavyweight division or Primo.

Difficult to judge Carnera properly as the influence of the mob played such a massive part in his career.
