Who is the best driver?

Just to start off with, I'm no fan of motorsports. For me the engineers are more important than the drivers. This is more in particular to F1.

Indy car (or whatever the Americans call their F1 equivalent) seems to place more emphasis on the skill of the drivers as opposed to the mechanics as all cars are the same. Its more the best driver who wins as opposed to the best car.

For example is Vettel a better driver that Shumacher or does he just have the better car? If they had identical cars, who would be world champ?

As to the rest of your post, racing in a formula / category where all drivers have identical cars tends to favour the more aggressive drivers, those who can race wheel-to-wheel and are willing to take risks. Based on that, Alonso and Hamilton would probably be the leading contenders for best driver.

However, its a pretty pointless question since, as you pointed out yourself, F1 is more about the engineering than the driving. No less a figure than Ross Brawn said success was 90% down to the car and 10% down to the driver.
