Yep, just realized I'd caught the scores wrong and assumed he'd pulled out due to injury because of the bagel. He lost the first set too.

What the hell is the point in beating Federer if you get whooped like that next round?

The point is that it gives Federer some much needed resting time.

Well, he'll be feeling hacked off with himself of course. But the result itself doesn't surprise me in the least, it was almost written in the stars

The history of the game is truly littered with examples of a player having an against the odds moment-in-the-sun (or in A-Rod's case, under the floodlights) only to then fall heavily the very next round against opposition significantly weaker than the previous victim .

For two out of three sets against Federer everything just happened to come together for Roddick - including a little assistance from Fed along the way. Roddick took his chances well, sure ; but as I (+ no doubt others) suspected, it proved to be a false dawn as regards any sort of big turnaround in his recent, very average, form .....

I watched the Monaco v Roddick match, and I must say the second set was all Juan way traffic.

Federer will be kicking himself for not at least protecting his points from Miami 2011. His path to the semis was looking pretty clear - Monaco has never troubled Fed, and Fish only ever managed one win in eight.

But then again the upset might just have happened anyway against one of those two (ie rather than Roddick). Fed's good run was always going to end at some point.

I was surprised how well Federer performed in Indians Wells after winning in Dubai and Rotterdam. I thought the effort would take its toll. Maybe that's what happened in Miami against Roddick, he is not a young buck any more. Roddick did play well too.

Roddick himself is not that much younger than Federer of course. But then A-Rod has played far less tennis in the past 6 months than Fed has - let alone with anything approaching the same sort of success.

Federer lost to the better player on the day. I don't buy some of the guf...err excuses of fatigue or that he wasn't too fussed if he lost. Remember this is a player who apparently is hungry to get back to No.1 so this earlyish exit sets him right back in that quest so no doubt he wanted this win. Roddick pin-pointed the reason he won saying he varied his tactics on previous defeats against Federer and perhaps confused Fed enough to snatch the win. All the same like I said with Murray's early exit in IW in the grand context it is just a blip and no big deal - just a bad day at the office and move on.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray into the quarters playing a good solid game against Gilles Simon to win in straight sets. More ranking points in the bank and Tipsarevic is next up.

Watched the Simon and Murray match. First set was quite ugly. I thought Simon played some lovely shots, but succumbed to the errors. He can't hit off the FH for more than 2 strokes. Credit to Murray as he varied up his length and shots and I don't think Simon knew what was going to come next over the net.

Next round and Tipsy waits. Another pusher that shouldn't trouble Murray.

Gasquet burning himself out in the first set. Saw some of the highlights and altough he was hitting really well, he invested so much energy in that first set. Had he taken the first set I still would've fancied Djokovic in 3.

Of course He is the kind of player that absolutely LIVES for big matches, and I know he's been wanting to play Murray for a long time. That's why I think it could be a great match.
Murray played well against Simon last night, so he's the favourite, naturally.

I would never call Tipsy a pusher (or hacker)...when he's on, he's ON and an exciting player to watch.

He'd have zero chance if he was a pusher. Since he's not, I give him 20% for tonight and that's assuming Murray plays well like he did last night.

Alot depends on Tipsy really, if he has one of those mercurial days he can have then anything is possible. If he's just playing normal stuff then its hard to see a win as Andy will just grind him down into mistakes.
I like Janko...one of the more colourful and interesting guys on tour, well-read too...not sure about his stints at Club DJ'ing but hey, why not!

I actually don't like him at all...Nole is far smarter, more interesting and charming. Smart enough not to flaunt it

What happened to A-Rod? He must have been so fired up in the match against Fed and then so flat against Pico - what a shame, was hoping that he would go a little further in the draw.

Well done AM. Managed to grab sofa for a few games and he looked as if he was playing very well. I find Simon really compelling to watch - I am not sure quite why

Paes and Stepanek winning the double 10/8 in the 3rd v Nestor Myrnl.

Must be one of the best team ever. Both supremely talented.
