Excellent news for Glasgow: John Barclay - one year with an option on a further year

Gives Warriors some backrow choices/options:
6 - Rob Harley, Angus MacDonald
7 - John Barclay, Chris Fusaro
8 - Ryan Wilson, Viliami Ma’afu

Will need that to compete on 2 fronts

Barclay re-signs for Warriors Empty Barclay Re-Signs for Glasgow

Post by Dorothy_Mantooth Tue Mar 27, 2012 11:09 pm

John Barclay has signed a one year deal with Glasgow, think there is an extra year option. Good news that he has signed, does look like that he really wanted to leave and at the moment has not found anyone interested so will try in another year.

With so many players out of contract in 2 years time, maybe it suits the club not to have another player going out of contract in 2 years time.

Either way I am glad we have him next season, at least!

Also have James Eddie back next season, who is more than capable of covering in the back row.

Had forgotten about Jedi, Dot, he will be handy to have back as well. Presumably Forrester will be on his way?

Those are some really strong options, and there should be enough cover to maintain quality throughout the season. When you consider the strength that Lineen has added to the front row in Cusack, and the emergence of Campbell as a top prospect in the second row, that Glasgow pack will have a mean look to it next season.

1.Welsh 2.MacArthur 3.Cusack 4.Swinson 5.Kellock 6.Harley 7.Barclay 8.Ma'afu

16.Grant 17.Thompson/Hall 18.Low 19.Ryder/Campbell 20.MacDonald

Even Toonie should be able to win matches with that lot!

Time to let Forrester go. He should try his hand at something other than rugby.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and as of a few weeks back had not been offered a new deal. With two new backrow signings being announced and Barclay staying since, it does not look good for him. Injuries have really cost him a proper shot at it. He missed the start of the season, when he would if fit had got game time during the WC.

I would not be surprised if Verbakel, Dewey and Aramburu all leave as they are also out of contract at the end of the year. Would like Aramburu to sign on for another year though.

Barclay is a very good 7 on his game but he is a heart player too and sometimes appears to drift off. Will be sad to see Eddie go but he was on a Sevens contract this season. Will not be sad to see Dewey go however - how the hell he ever got a Scotland cap is beyond me. Aramburo is a useful utility back as he can play anywhere across the backline.

God damn it- this is just the kind of player Ulster need to be after to fill our NIQ spot in the backrow.

Barclay re-signs for Warriors Empty Re: Barclay re-signs for Warriors

Great news for Glasgow, improved depth should help over international windows and increased competition for starting places is vital. Very happy with the news, especially as I thought he was as good as gone.

Does make you wonder what bearing, if any, the Townsend appointment had. Did Barclay sign only a 1 year contract + option because he was "unsure" about the new appointment and wanted to hedge his bets? Or is it possible that the new coach was the reason Glasgow managed to hang on to Barclay in the first place?, they have worked together previously in the Scotland setup after all.

I suspect Barclay is pretty pleased with the Townsend appointment. Townsend was on the coaching panel that decided to pick Barclay at 6. He must be grateful for the caps.

Eddie is re-signing with Glasgow next year.
