WHITAKER, PEP, BENITEZ, LOCCHE? Empty WHITAKER, PEP, BENITEZ, LOCCHE?

Post by ONETWOFOREVER Fri 15 Apr 2011, 3:27 pm

Just wondered what your thoughts were about these guys. My question is simple, were they great boxing technicians or just naturally gifted. I have been watching sweet pea's fights recently and as I marvel at his ability to avoid punches I cant help but notice the many technical mistakes he makes like crossing his feet for exarmple. Then there is Benitez who according to reports hardly trained and was very idle in preparing for fights, does not sound like a technician does it? Pep was very small even for a feather but had what some would say the greatest educated feet in boxing, Locche I have to admit I have not seen enough of him so I will leave that up to someone with more knowledge.

Does history consider them great boxing technicians? and is it justified?

I think history does, ONETWO, and I think it is justified.

If anything, I believe that the mercurial Locche is UNDER appreciated, today. One of my favourite fighters of all, he possessed simply outrageous genius.

I imagine you've seen this, but in case you might not have :

If Benetiz wasn't around in the same era as Hearns & Leonard then he would be rated top 25 all time along with Locche, Pep & Whitaker

It's one thing to have physical gifts like RJJ but another to use them in the way these guys did

Always a hug Whitaker fan; he made some superb fighters look ridiculous during his prime. One of the most natural, fluid defenses I have ever seen.

Spot on, had the talent to beat both but lacked commitment, you don't beat Duran and Cervantes without being pretty damm good
