Corrie Sanders.

Saw a few of the SA cricketers tweeting about this, such sad news and a senseless act.

JOHANNESBURG - Eyewitness News can confirm that former heavy weight boxing champion Corrie Sanders has died after he was shot while at a restaurant outside Brits, northwest of Pretoria.
It is understood he was shot in the stomach.
He was transferred to the Kalafong Hospital for further treatment but has since passed away.
The boxer’s close friend, musician Kurt Darren, says he was shocked when he learnt the news.
“It’s not speculation; he definitely passed away at 4am. He fought hard for eight hours. He was shot in the stomach by armed robbers at his nephew’s 21st birthday.”
Police are investigating the case.

Great 3 round fighter. He was probably the most dangerous HW of his day, being a tall southpaw with fast hands and big power. Remember him clowning Michael Sprott, and I believe he also beat Johnny Nelson.

I've read that he was attending a nephews birthday celebrations in a restaurant when 3 men came in to commit an armed robbery. They shot randomly and escaped with a handbag and a camera. Sanders was shot in the hand and in the stomach.

I read he jumped over his daughter to cover her from gun fire, as the robbers were just randomly shooting in the restaurant he was celebrating his nephews birthday in ... He made the ultimate sacrifice to save his daughter.

A terrible way to die, but the man is a complete hero and should be respected for being that kind of guy...

RIP Corrie. A true Champ and a much bigger man than the cowards who did this.

What dreadful news. RIP Corrie, a truly exciting heavyweight best remembered for pummeling Wlad and giving Vitali hell.

totally gutted. i liked corrie a lot. he is one of the best heavyweights of the past ten years and i would have still backed him to beat wlad in a rematch even after wlads improvements. probably vitalis toughest opponent since lewis and the second best heavy since.

South Africas one of the most violent in the world, with a large number of dispossessed, poor, desperate people with no or little welfare, high unemployment and a percieved elite living in much better conditions. Conditions haven't improved for a lot of black people since the end of aparthide and although I am in no way condoning this sort of behaviour, it is not surprising that it happens. Any society that neglects it's poorest whilst it rich get richer will go the same way.

South Africa is too corupt. Such a sad waste of life for a man who worked hard.

The thing about Corrie is that he was a national hero to ALL South Africans. He held sessions in the townships and as an amateur during the dying days of apartheid went to the townships to train.

He was a magnificent person and an exceptional man. He once said the greatest day in his life was meeting Madiba. I hope the scum who did this gets what he deserves which is probably AIDs in a South African jail.

I have a colleague who gave up his mansion in Jo'burg to move to England because the white midle/upper class people were being robbed at gunpoint...burgled and killed by the local blacks.......He said it was like Russian roulette..He also couldn't get his Son into a decent University with the quota system...

It's like Animal farm.. South Africa...you fight against apartheid all these years and then you basically get it enforced the other way....

Unfortunately nobody bothers with human rights anymore in big Countries....easier to target Iran...and Syria...

Praise to Sanders for sacrificing his life the best way a Man can.. defending his family...

Crime is a problem. Car jacking almost a national sport. But it happens across all races and not targetted as your friend alluded to.

Anyway I bet your friend was happy pre 1994 when he felt safe and secure whilst most were not.

I'll also add that the SA economy is now better than at any stage of his history. It is now part of BRICSA nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and SA) of fast growing emerging nations.

people overlook sanders. seems to be this genral consensus now that wlad has improved into one of the 2 best heavies since lewis. although wlad has massively improved hes not fought another corrie sanders. id back sanders to have beaten wlad in a rematch too.

He gave Vitali hell and doubtful Wlad would have taken the punches Vitali took.

To be fair Sanders was dangerous to anyone during the first few rounds, Klitschko didn't use his jab at all, got caught and then had no idea what to do and just kept trying to fight.

RIP Sanders, at least the killers were caught.

Happened to my previous boss , his son is an up an comer too, the uni's here were falling over themselves to get him after his interview- even to the point of offering his education for free.

People like Sanders who progress despite the tragedy of their surroundings and appeal to the masses without playing political games are to be admired and emulated. Tragic loss of a courageous man who pierced ignorance and gave his life for someone he loved. I hope those bar stewards get exactly what they deserve not only for robbing a thoroughly decent man of his life but for the callous disregard of anyone elses life just to sate their greed.
