It was 20 years ago today (well 2nd october 1993, 19 yrs for the pedants)
THEN:
My programme from the Rec:
BATH: Chilcott, Dawe, Ubogu, Haag, Redman, Robinson, Ben Clarke, J Hall. Backs: Hill, Catt, Lumsden, Guscott, de Glanville, Abadayo, Callard.
Almost an 'England' team. 7-8 internationals 2 Lions. Since then at least 4 or 5 have moved on to senior coaching positions. Others have vanished to obscurity.
GLAWS: Phillips, Hawker, Jones, Sims, West, Ashmead, I Smith. Backs: Hannaford, Beech, Nicholson, Caskie, Cummins, Holford, T Smith.
Just 2 internationals according to the programme.
Sadly I did not keep a note of the score or of the attendance.
NOW:
Gloucester today in professional era have improved immensely, with the Kingsholm ground also much improved in the last 20 years.
Bath have not recovered their former glory of the amateur days, and are struggling to develop a decent facility, the Rec being a beautiful but limited ground.
Just a bit of 20 year trivia to ponder on / comment as you may wish.

My favourite thing about rugby then was the Sunday night highlights programme on BBC, and the letters instead of numbers on the back of a couple of teams shirts. Was it Leicester and Bristol? Bring that back!

Leics used to have letters on shirts instead of numbers.
I'm not sure about Bristol. Bath had an incredible squad in the final 'amateur' days.

Sgt. Pepper told the band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile
So let me introduce to you
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

When I interviewed Victor Ubogu last week (yes that is another shameless plug for the v2 Podcast ) he felt that pre-professionalism Bath were the most "professional" team (in attitude and training). After that everyone else caught up in a hurry.

Leicester still have the letters on their shirts- just a little one though, on the front, close to the badge on the left. I think they do it as a homage to the pre-professional era.

The Pedants were much better than the Beatles.

Bristol had letters but in the main the opposite way round to Leicester. So the Full Back used to wear "A".
The Tigers lettering went across the rows so Dean Richards would pack down at number 8 but wear "G" (7th letter) while the Openside wore "H". Tigers continued to have the Letters on the shorts until told not to. So now, (as mentioned earlier) they have a tiny letter on the shirt by the badge. The training tops they wear for warm-ups have letters on the back.

Bris had letters too, but they had them the other way round, A was full back.

All you need to know (well, actually more than anyone needs) about the history of rugby shirt numbers:

Bath definitely had numbers on their shirt. If I remember correctly each number was proceeded by the £ sign, I couldn't say why...

Sounds like lineout codes to confuse the oppos, and also the ref.
'Captain, please speak to your number 8 err.. letter er... well just talk to that big dude with blood capsule'

Everyone is scared of the Number 13 shirt, aren't they?
We're also scared of scoring try bonus points, hence why we try to avoid them at all costs.

No bonus points 20 years ago, and the system seemed to suit Bath much better then.
BTW, any of you fanboys have the final score from 2nd October 1993 ?
Although I was there apparently, I just don't remember it.

LT, thanks
Tickets were £7.00 for me and £4.00 for my son.
Bath were unbeaten with 4 straight wins after this match.
Things have changed in a number of ways.
Orrell and Newcastle Gosforth were still in the Prem that year.
Replaced now by LW & Exeter.

There were just 10 teams in the Courage Clubs Championship:
Bath, Bristol, Gloucester, Quins, Leicester, LI, Newcastle, Northampton, Orrell and Wasps.
Gloucester 1st XV had 41 scheduled fixtures - 23 friendlies & 18 league matches. (Mind you they seem to have played both Blackheath and Treviso on 4th Sept! (Looking at the fixtures it seems some of them went on a pre season jaunt to Italy while they also had fixtures in the UK). they also had fixtures with Cardiff, Newport, Neat, Bridgend, Pontypridd & Pontypool. those were the days.
