Trivia Stat Empty Trivia Stat

Post by lags72 Tue 22 Jan 2013, 12:49 pm

By way of random comparison ...........

Following the win over Makarova which sees her through to the semis, Maria Sharapova has spent a total of 5 hours 15 minutes on court playing five rounds.

This is just 12 minutes more than the duration of the Djokovic/Wawrinka clash.

Or 38 minutes less than the men's AO Final 2012 ........

Shocked

So that gets her around $100k per hour (so far) not bad - Grigor will be pleased! (his CAREER earnings is around double that!)

The question arises yet again should the Ladies(best of 3 sets) get the same prize money as the Males (best of 5 sets)in a Slam Run

Grigor will indeed be hoping to see some of that cash spent on him, not least after his early exit.

Either Screechapova is in invincible form (just nine games dropped in total across all five rounds so far...) OR there is something rotten in the state of the WTA Headscratch

Don't know about rotten but there seems to be a big gulf at the top, a bit like the Men's, The Russian has breezed through with the loss of a very few games, so it would appear the competition is poor, or she is brilliant.

However when she meets Serena Williams she will probably lose, and how many tournaments does Serena play in a session!

Well of course they should if they are putting the bottoms on seats and therefore the same amount of dollars in the AO coffers as the men. If they are not then it is because there is maybe not so much charisma at the top of the women's game as there has been in the past. Even so, as Sharapova commented recently - she will probably still fill more seats than Gilles Simon 90 per cent of the time.

This question should be settled on box office results, it is hardly a profession where there is an hourly rate - the logical conclusion to that argument is to pay Djokovic more for his epic fourth round win than Murray and Federer for coming efficiently through.

If Graf was still playing, it would be a moot point. I suspect the next generation of men won't excite the same interest as this one, and maybe it will be the women who are attracting the big crowds in the future?

Sharapova really is the female tennis equivalent of Beckham. See attached for yearly career earning of $28 million irrespective of her pocket money for doing well this week actually on the tennis court.

If you have a sweet tooth you can also help her out by purchasing some of her "Sugarpova" candy recently launched. Sounds horrible - in fact rather like screeching and wailing quite an acquired taste.

I've actually had the dubious pleasure of trying a Sugarpova candy JHM, and I can report that it really was far from enjoyable.

So much so, that my immediate reaction was to let out a series of ear-piercing involuntary screeches. My concerned neighbours came running to the rescue ...... Shocked

lags72 she claims in one article to be handing them out to all the male players. Maybe her good friend Gilles overdosed on them earlier on in the week.

Then again if she's also been treating her opponents before the matches then that would perhaps explain her remarkable run?

I've always had this bizarre fantasy thought (and I'm very much back to tennis now!!) of one of the top women - Sharapova would do just fine - turning up unheralded and somehow unrecognised at a classy private amateur club and then somehow engineering a match against the big-headed men's champion in front of his fellow members.

I've just moved into the area, I've played a little bit before but could do with some practise and maybe a few tips.

That's the sort of script. Oh what fun.

What is it with hot blooded men and Sharapova?

OK she's loaded, does a nice range in confectionery, looks pretty good in her swimsuit but apologies lk don't think she's after a fitness trainer. After all you can nip down to HMV (assuming it's still trading) for the "Maria Sharapova Hot Routine and Fitness Tips" DVD.

Of course I could be misreading your intentions entirely in which case I'd go for the industrial standard ear mufflers like those used at Heathrow for sure.

Back on thread...

OK, MaSha has had a very straight-forward run through the tournament so far (same for Serena and Azarenka), but then it's not as though Murray or Federer have been overly stretched by their opponents so far.

Fair to say that there is a very big gap between the best and the rest of the WTA, simply because the top few players have too much power for most of the others and so can totally overwhelm them. At least on the men's side the inferior player is likely to hold a couple of serves per set, so the gap on the scoreboard doesn't look so big, but the chances of a shock result are almost equally slim.

As for the equal pay / bums on seats argument, it's difficult to quantify the relative appeal of the men's and ladies games from the number of paying spectators in the stadium, because the matches are scheduled together. It's not the fault of the current women players that they are only required to play 3 set matches in slams, and there have been times not that long ago where women's tennis was in a healthier and more comepetetive state that the men's game (plus was less one-dimensional than a Sampras v Ivanisevic serve-fest). It is though perhaps unfortunate that equal prize money was introduced as women's tennis declined in competetiveness while the men's game was coming in to a very high quality period.

Mrs DH would be equally unimpressed, although I agree that MaSha doesn't really float my boat. We do though have an agreement whereby if Ana Ivanovic was to turn up on the doorstep, Mrs DH would disappear to her mothers for a few hours, no questions asked Wink
