Shevchenko
So Andriy Shevchenko the former footballer has entered a pro golf tournament in the Ukraine. Does anyone know how good he is or is it just his ego taking over?

Re: Shevchenko
I would think most clubs have players much better than him, in fact I read he plays off two (Jun 2013), so he's not even any better than me, and I'm nowhere near being able to play in a decent amateur event, let alone a European Tour event.
Ukranian nepotism and invite I think. A publicity stunt.

Red hot favourite to finish dead last, the real bet is by how many more he will take than who ever finishes 2nd last.

Re: Shevchenko
I think you're all being a bit harsh on him. There's competition for that last place from Kafelnikov........
and Nick Dougherty.

Is Harrington playing too?

Re: Shevchenko
Well he probably knows the course well, so might not finish last.
As far as I remember Kafelnikow didn't finish last either at his first ET (CT?) event.

Given the standard of some of the "pro's" that's not surprising.

Re: Shevchenko
Books and covers. I have to say Harrington is at least a character in a game of tight-lipped clones. Someone else posted a link to a YouTube video of him addressing the University Philosophical Society in Dublin, and I have to say he was a very entertaining and informative speaker. In the video he talks about his mental approach to the game and some of it is clever and some of it seems like madness. It's not boring though.super_realist wrote:Actually don't mind Harrington, good short game and great putter.

Re: Shevchenko
Agreed Bob, I've enjoyed his appearances in Bob Rotellas books.
He's just a character (glad that he has one) who is easy to laugh at, his looks, penguin walk, halfwit accent etc, but does seem a genuinely nice chap.

+1 through 3, though he has a couple of compatriots finished at +20 & +22. Though a russian is +14through 9!

Through 6 and still no par. - 5 Baggies and a birdie for +4. Looks like your average monthly medal card, he's got some competition for last place though!!!

I dont think Sheva will be last...not with PAwel Jabol and his +20 through 9, a 13 is always going to make the card look scary.

Re: Shevchenko
Finished with a 12 over 84.
Looks like a great score compared to Pawel Jabol +37 over 109 !!! 6 other scores in the 90's. How do those players get invited?

Re: Shevchenko
109 is absolutely unacceptable. It's similar to asking Douglas Bader to run in the 100m.
Even on a course set up for pro's that still must make him a 15-20 or so handicapper. Should barely be allowed to watch, let alone play in it.

I am nearer the 20 hc of that scale. Actually bang on. But how hard can that course be set up?

Re: Shevchenko
I bet you could beat 109 too Ben.
Having someone as bad as that in your tournament would be like sticking Shane Lowry on the wing for Real Madrid. Complete joke, even on the Challenge Tour.

Re: Shevchenko
Michael Bembenik, a teaching pro from Indianapolis shot a 103 in a Web.com event a couple of months ago. It could be possible just to have a horrific day or maybe even an injury.

Re: Shevchenko
Golf Digest has the scorecard of the 109. 5 pars, 5 bogies and 8 others, including a 10 on a par 4 and a 13 on a par 5. Looked a bit like some of my scorecards except that I would have picked up already on the bad holes !

Re: Shevchenko
I had a 14 on our par 5 10th this year including tee shot OOB left. Then right. Then left again. Got egged on to continue for a laugh. It was funny so I did. Punched one straight about 100 yards, top, duff, left next short, poor chip and 3 putts. Bingo. Only +1 for the next 8 though. Shot 84 (+14) and had 34 points. Funny how it comes and goes!

Well lorus, injury aside, I don't care how much of an off day he had, anyone that shoots 3 figures should have the word "pro" permanently removed from their job title.

In the end sheva beat 7. Ukrainians and Russians mainly amateurs. But also Irish pro mike Kelly. Obviously didn't have the luck of the Irish in Ukraine these past 2 days. Pawel withdrew after his opening century..

Re: Shevchenko
Inco, I'm confident I could do better in a PGA event in Lowry's group than Lowry could on the wing for Accrington Stanley.
As for Shevchenko. Two handicap my backside. 84 and 86 is atrocious.
