European Tour - Dunhill Links
First topic message reminder :
The usual good scoring in this event continued yesterday. Carnoustie, the only course putting up any defence. Great starts from Oliver Wilson and Tom Lewis with 64's.......Wilson has threatened a few times in recent years without doing too well at weekends and Tom Lewis has turned into a Thursday specialist, usually ending up as a Sunday also ran.
Speaking of also rans, Harrington at +4 probably needs at least -10 over the next 2 days just to make the cut and spare a thought for Nick Dougherty who ran up a 12 at Carnoustie's 18th on his way to 86....................
The Cut after 3 rounds will be the usual Top 60 & ties i believe, so if the weather stays fair, it'll fall at -6 or -7 so there isn't room for any Links nightmares.

That would be nice Kwini, I'm doing starting for a Juniors event tomorrow which should finish just in time for me to watch the back 9 from the Clubhouse.kwinigolfer wrote:I hope there'll be a bar tab picked up by David tomorrow if he stays in the shake-up - champagne of course if he wins!
Do they adjust the tees for tomorrow at the Dunhill? Imagine they won't want another handful of 62's and 63's.
Obviously they'll move the pins, I guess there'll be some tee movement as well. There is a bit more breeze forecast for tomorrow but not really enough to worry the Pros. I would hazard a guess that -24/-25 will be the winning score.

Really is a pity this doesn't finish in Carnoustie..................TOC is always anti climactic even when it's a close finish. just wish they could do something with the awful 18th.kwinigolfer wrote:I hope there'll be a bar tab picked up by David tomorrow if he stays in the shake-up - champagne of course if he wins!

Well it's the same for everybody JC but I agree and I've said it on other threads several times, I think Carnoustie has the most dramatic last few holes in all of golf.
You stand on the 15th Tee at TOC with a 2 shot lead and you will have 1 maybe 2 shots to worry about, you have to feel you can defend it.
You stand on the 15th Tee at Carnoustie with a 2 shot lead and you will know fine well that a 2 shot lead means absolutely nothing, every and I mean every single shot demands the utmost, technically and mentally.
Obviously I'm biased toward Carnoustie as I play it annually and love it to bits but putting that aside, it is still to me the ultimate test and so so much more worthy of the final round of a tournament of this stature.

What's up in Scotland?
Some very high numbers being posted by golfers who started on #10, some of those who kicked off on #1 seem to be playing pitch and putt.

25% of the 2004 Ryder Cup Team in the St.Andrews Top six - all our yesterdays!
You'd think Casey, Harrington and McGinley would be inspired.

Happy to make do with a Cider . Decent crowd in the Clubhouse to watch the finish as well.
Very pleased for him...it's been a long road back with all his injuries.

Great win for David Howell. Gotta admit I came into the day looking for a Uihlein win... but just no way I could root for Peter over Howell in the end...

Re: European Tour - Dunhill Links
I don't know who supplies the TV production for the E.T. that is shown on Golf Channel but today's was beyond dreadful.
Dougie Donnelley sounds like a sycophantic pr1ck who thinks he gets paid by the word and Jay Bloody Townsend is surely a touch out of order when he says on the air that he has to switch the mic from hand-to-hand to offer Uihlein a fist-pump?
Unless Warren Humphreys is station master the talking heads just offer utter drivel.
Lovely interview with Howeller following his win; and I'd've loved to have heard the animated chat Uihlein (one of this year's great success stories anywhere) and Howell were having during the play-off. Seem to be two great blokes.

Really pleased for Howeller - just wish it hadn't been this week when I had Uihlein at 50/1

Nice to see Howell winning again! And surprised. Hope he can make a Stenson-like comeback!

Re: European Tour - Dunhill Links
I believe it's IMG who produce the pictures at least. Never quite understand the situation with the commentary though - suspect that there is a standard track parcelled with the footage (which I would have thought is what you get where you are) but can be replaced by the broadcaster. Other than say Sky who might have their own people at an event, this arrangement would make sense for switching the commentary to a different language for non-English speaking audiences as well I suppose.kwinigolfer wrote:I don't know who supplies the TV production for the E.T. that is shown on Golf Channel but today's was beyond dreadful.
David Howell's next blog will be very interesting to read. Well, even MORE interesting than usual. Funny, self-deprecating bloke.

Great stuff from David Howell. One of sports good blokes. Not been a terrific few years for him with injury and form so nice to see him win again.
I remember for a few short months (back in 2006 i think) Howell was one of the best players in the world, so he's got the talent. Shame it's the tail end of the season, but I'll certainly keep in on my betting radar for 2014.

Delighted for David Howell. Can't believe it's 2006 since his last win. I remember he had an injury and never got back to his best after that. Hopefully he can build on this. The win should open a few wgc doors so hopefully he can capitalise and push for a RC place. If he still putts like he did a few years ago then any team would be strengthened with his presence.

Re: European Tour - Dunhill Links
different commentators but I think we watched the same pictures kwinI, I'm finding it harder and harder to watch this tournament as it seems to be turning into pro celebrity golf, I really don't have any interest in Hugh Grants golf game!! I think I watched all of 15 mins before switching over. Pleased to see Howell win though, and Tom Lewis secure his card.kwinigolfer wrote:I don't know who supplies the TV production for the E.T. that is shown on Golf Channel but today's was beyond dreadful.

Pompey?
Thought they'd dominate(!!), but going from bad to worse right now.
Dunno what the buzz is 'round Fratton Park but would think 14,000 season ticket-holders would hope for something better than a thrashing at York.
Happy to see your Wolves going well though, even happier to see 20,000 fans in Molyneux - is the new stand all finished? Hope they go up. (Very sorry to see Dave Wagstaffe has run down the wing for the last time - great player, wonderful entertainer in a most entertaining team!)

The new stand was finished last season, quite bizarre looking, very steep! Haven't sat in that one yet but might do this year. To be honest our results and league position are a lot better than the performances deserve, maybe that's the Jacket effect, win playing badly. I'm used to it being the other way round!!

gw,
Bad day for WolvesLand with Peter Broadbent dying. The Golden Age of Molyneux fading now; who's left? Bert Williams, Ron Flowers, not many more.

Re: European Tour - Dunhill Links
Peter Broadbent grew up working in the East Kent coalmines and playing weekend sport at the Welfare Club, before he made it professional. The mines are long closed but Tilmanstone CW still has a few football teams as well as my cricket club; and the shiny new pavillion, built with coalfield regeneration grants, has got a framed newspaper cutting of him and Jimmy Murray, both lining up in the same Wolves squad a few years on from playing together at that very ground...
Have to admit, despite glancing at the cutting every weekend for the past few years, I hadn't ever realised quite how good either one was.

Re: European Tour - Dunhill Links
Ned,
I knew he was from Kent but didn't appreciate his background. Nor Jimmy Murray's.
Broadbent would have won plenty more caps in a different era but had to contend with the likes of Johnny Haynes and Bobby Robson, then Charlton etc.
Great player and revered at Molyneux. Wolves churned out terrific players on production lines for about 15 years, often from South Yorkshire, but obviously also from further afield.
Looking forward to Ivan Ponting's obit in The Independent.
(Wouldn't have said Murray was in quite the same class, but don't believe I ever saw him play.)
