The best player I have seen in my lifetime is Diego Maradona, who would have a field day on todays pitches.

Maradona would have a similar effect to Messi if you were to throw him in that Barca team, no question.

I would love to have seen the 3 candidates swap roles 2bh.
Try seeing messi do what he does on one of those pitches and see how much fun maradona would have with these pitches even more so than pele imo.
Look at THAT maradona goal to see how the ball was bobbling around constantly.

I don't know if Messi could live with the brutal treatment Maradona and Pele faced. Sometimes they were physically assaulted. Nowadays the players are protected and their skills can come to the fore. Had Pele and Maradona been playing today they would be out of this world. The pitches are like carpets and the balls are very different; much lighter with better controlability.

I know it,s been said before but he needs a very good World Cup to maybe put him at the top.

The Brazilian Ronaldo must be close, if we're talking attackers. Goals all around Europe, a World Cup winners medal, plus more World Cup goals than anyone.

What I don't like about it is that goals are so important in the goat debate.
It's a shame that a defender or goalie can never really be considered.
Casillas, although not the madrid no1 at present, has a stunning amount of trophies.
