Apart from Nadal v Tomic, some other interesting matches on Day 2 are (IMO)..

Murray v Soeda - Murray back at a slam after his back-surgery break.

Two Australian youngsters in Kyrgios and Kokkinakis in their first round matches may have better luck than Tomic.

Will Hogstedt make a difference to Wozniacki's slam aspirations?

Federer plays Duckworth who can be a handful.

Isner retires 2 sets down to Klizan.

Dimitrov through to the 2nd round.

6:4 first set to Roger.  Not entirely convincing but hopefully he is just doing what he needs to and will be able to up it later.

Nishikori going into 5th set.

Fed is not having a Duck hunting day, Duck's game is very similar to poor version of Nalbandian, I am pretty impressed with Duck's game so far, this is the talent the Aussie team should focus on instead of all these Bomics.

6:4 second set for Fed too.  Much like the first one - Fed not looking either too impressive nor obviously poor.

Tsonga in the meantime wins his match, and Nishikori is a break up in the fifth.

Stepanek takes first set TB against Kavcic.

Duckworth seems to be disintegrating a little.

Game over for Duckworth. A good effort in the first two sets it seems, but not quite enough. Good win for Dimi, wonder whether he has the legs to make week 2? Shame about Isner.

57 consecutive slam appearances for Federer  

Had to miss tail end of Roger's match but it looks like it was easy enough in the end.  Pretty straightforward victory without much fuss - just about right for these super hot conditions.

Elsewhere, Nishikori did win the fifth set, Kyrgios is a set up on Becker, as is Paire on Dancevic (after what the score is suggesting must have been a tense tie break), and Stepanek in now two sets up against Kavcic.

Hweitt breaks Seppi - 3:1 in the opening set.

Oof, Hewitt vs Seppi...tough match for both in the opening round.

The heat is cooking a few players. One of women being sick on court and Dancevic apparently fainting on Court Six in his match.

Watched a bit of Kyrgios.  Lost the second set in TB after having served for the set at 5:4.  Too bad.

Oh my, it looks like Stepanek retired.  I wonder what happened there.

Hewitt loses first set tie-breaker to Sept. Radek Stepanek exits retiring when trailing against Kavcic.

Eurosport are citing the heat for his withdrawal but I find that hard to believe as he was leading by two sets to one though a break down in the fourth.

A surprise brewing on Margaret Court  Arena? Del Potro loses a first set tie-break to Rhyne Williams of USA. Hewitt now trails by two sets to Seppi.

Hewitt proving he isn't done yet breaks back and is pushing for another break. Andy Murray shortly about to take to court.

Del Potro starting his fightback by breaking serve midway through the second set. Verdasco also looking good for a win leading by two sets to one and a break up in the fourth.

Hewitt wins the third set and that looks set to be a marathon match. Murray off and running with an early break with Soeda offering up too many errors. As I type it is a double break and Murray leads 4-1.

Del Potro seems to have settled now and has broken early in the third set.

Murray wins the first set 6-1 in 24 minutes. Looking sharp but Soeda isn't offering a lot to be honest.

Really impressive from Murray. Aggressive and first serve functioning well. He leads Soeda 6-1 4-1.

Del Potro now in control leading by two sets to one. Deliciano Lopez looks good for the second round as easy leads Devaarman by two sets and a break.

Murray crushing Soeda leading 6-1 6-1 in 49 minutes.

Soeda more competitive now as Murray's intensity levels drop. Del Potro/Williams going with serve in the fourth set and Hewitt on the verge of taking the fourth set on Rod laver Arena.

Del Potro breaks in the fourth set and looks good now for the second round. Hewitt level at two sets all but Seppi has broken serve at the beginning of the set. Murray breaks to lead Soeda 6-1 6-1 4-3.

Lopez comes through in straight sets and could potentially meet Murray in the 3rd Round.

Murray ups his level again and powers past Soeda to win 6-1 6-1 6-3 winning in 1 hour 27 minutes.

Del Potro through in four sets to the Second Round. Hewitt still battling on against Seppi though a break down in the final set.

Rusty's such a warrior. Very, very few players have that will, that fight, that determination to win and, above all, that passion. I'd rather watch someone like Hewitt than someone like Gulbis any day.

Good start for Andy. 32 winners, just 13 unforced errors.

12 aces in only 41 first serves is impressive too.

It will get much tougher but that was very promising.

An epic match between Hewitt and Seppi ends with a win for the gutsy Italian. As for Hewitt you have to feel sorry for him but it encapsulates his last few years - lots of guts and fight with little end product.

Tomic leads 2-1 (on serve) but is struggling already with a groin injury and has had a medical time-out. If it was going to be tough fully fit then what is it now for Tomic.

Nadal breaks to lead 5-4. Tomic still struggling and you have to wonder now if this match will be completed. Monfils goes through in straight sets and Cilic is on a comeback as he trailed by two sets but has now pulled a set back and is a break up in the fourth.

Nadal wins the first set 6-4 and a handshake follows and Rafa is through to the second round. Meanwhile Simon is involved in a five set marathon against Daniel Brands (at 10-9 now).

Cilic back level at two sets all against Granollers. My money would now be on Cilic as Granollers looks like he is running on empty.

So Round 1 essentially complete and most of the top mens seeds through in relative comfort. Haas and Isner (both through retirement) the only real second week contenders to fall.

With Isner out, an unseeded player is bound to reach R4. Looks a distinctly weak section - Klizan maybe the best known but he really slumped last year.

Brands/Simon at 14-14 in the fifth set. Simon having already saved seven match points.
