Last week the IRB announced that Ray Williams, the first paid coaching official in world rugby, had been selected to receive their highest award for services to rugby, the Vernon Pugh Award.

Iconic 1970s wing Gerald Davies led the tributes at a special reception at Parc y Scarlets and gave an insight into the man who helped pioneer coaching around the world and Welsh training sessions on Aberavon beach.

“Ray did nothing less than to cause a revolution in the game,” said Gerald.

Sad to read that Ray Williams passed away today. A man that the modern game of rugby owes a great deal to. He was a maverick coach years ahead of his time.

A great person. I had the pleasure of being coached by him a lifetime ago.

RIP Ray
