Gary Russell Jr vs Jhonny Gonzalez *SPOILERS INSIDE*
Surprised that no one has given this one a mention...
Very impressive win from Gary Russell Jr, who came up short against Lomachenko, but has just destroyed Gonzalez in 4 very one sided rounds. This is the same Gonzalez that blasted out Mares in one round as well.
He looked very fast and powerful too, makes Lomachenko's win look even more impressive now
thoughts?

I'm most angry with myself. I stayed up for it, as a clash between one big powerful guy and one quick skilful guy was sure to be what it was, however the birthday of a friend took it's toll, and I terminally lost consciousness having sat through two average undercard fights. RIP me.
Really does make Lomachenko look amazing, more than anything!

I posted a press release yesterday that said Gonzalez is getting sued by Golden Boy for 7 figures, so to get battered in the same weekend is a pretty rough few days. Can't imagine many have had a worse weekend.

Re: Gary Russell Jr vs Jhonny Gonzalez *SPOILERS INSIDE*
KNEW GONZALEZ WAS A HYPE JOB!!!
Typically boxing BS that GRJr, after getting schooled by Lomachenko, gets a cracking shot like this whereas Loma gets nothing.
Loma's promoters need to get his machine firing and quick. Clean up this division in a fight or two.
Unless he comes across someone who can through a check-hook, of course.....

Nice top three at featherweight: Walters, Lomachenko and Russell. Hope the first two face off (I'm sure they will).

Can be sure Loma will want to. But the match-making issues aren't emanating from the East.....

Re: Gary Russell Jr vs Jhonny Gonzalez *SPOILERS INSIDE*
So why can't GGG get a fight versus a top North American?
Ditto Kovalev?
Why did GRjr get a shot straight at a belt versus Gonzalez, depsite getting schooled by Lomachenko, whereas Loma is stuck with a rudimentary fight against Rodriguez?
What're the chances of GRjr offering a (unification) rematch with Loma now he has a strap?

You get what you're worth..............
Make a star an offer he can't refuse......
Risk/reward ratio is important............You yourself should know that.
Bob Foster only got training expenses for Dick Tiger's 175 strap..............But he thought he'd do him and he did...
Money is right/Build it.................and he will come...
GGG should take less If they think they can't lose..
Froch, Ward, Mayweather, Manny, Cotto already have legacies......
Like Michael Nunn he's in the who needs him club..........

Re: Gary Russell Jr vs Jhonny Gonzalez *SPOILERS INSIDE*
GGG could offer pence and Cotto and the like still wouldn't fight him.
Stevenson had career high paydays being offered versus Kov, didn't he, but still chose the soft option.
Yes it's risk-reward, but that's just a convenient excuse really as it allows supposedly 'top' fighters to duck their greatest risks.

It's total speculation on my part, I agree.
Happy to take a punt that Cotto will show no ambition to take on a top guy/risky fight in the division though.

Re: Gary Russell Jr vs Jhonny Gonzalez *SPOILERS INSIDE*
Interesting times for GGG..............He can spend the next two years at 160 cleaning up the garbage.....and stay till he's 35/36.....Maybe become a great middle like Marv..
Or he can spend the next two/three years ...venturing up to snag a 168 belt off a Degale and maybe bag Andre..........Perhaps later on maybe a catchweight against Kovo or Stevo If they are still about...........
Not sure which is the most legacy enhancing...
Good luck either way..

Mayweather beat 'the man' at 154 and is the 154 champ.
Happy for him to give up the belt if he doesn't want to defend it. But he can't call himself the champ if he doesn't.

Not sure belts matter to Manny, Mayweather, Ward types..........
Not even sure they matter to GGG types either.............If GGG wasn't defending a belt against Murray would anybody have wanted to see it less...

He shouldn't have the belt then Truss, if your not going to defend the belt (at the weight either) you should be stripped straight away and given a bunch of sh!t for going for it in the first place. (well maybe not the last bit but you know what i mean

I like the fact belts don't matter to the top guys (as I hate the commisions' BS) but only if they actually make some proper fights happen instead.

How would GGG dropping a division to face that division's best be akin to him jumping up 3 weight divisions to face that weight division's best? Not comparable situations.

Re: Gary Russell Jr vs Jhonny Gonzalez *SPOILERS INSIDE*
I've never really been too impressed with Russell up until now, but got to hand it to him for this one - very good stuff.
Selby's got it all to do if he's going to make a deep impact in the Featherweight division because as others have said, Walters, Lomachenko and Russell ain't a bad top three at all. Gradovich is no joke (the 'draw' against Velez before Christmas was a bit of a shocker of a verdict, think it might have been the very same night that Herrera and Bradley got shafted, too) but it might be the most winnable title shot Selby is going to get in the forseeable future.

Have to agree there...Selby's lack of power may be his one big drawback...
Certainly has plenty of talent

Very good stuff - but he was still outclassed by a guy* in only his third pro fight.

The gradovich robbery was one of those annoying ones where an accurate score wouldn't be hugely wide, but every round was so easy to score that interpretation is no excuse.
