US PGA Competition!

First topic message reminder :

It's the final major of the season taking place at Whistling Straits this week. John Cregan won this competition last year and the field will be looking to get their name on the winners along with jimbohammers, JDizzle and lorus59 who won the first three major competitions on the season.

The rules remain the same so if you haven't played before all you have to do is select six golfers, before the first tee off on Thursday, then sit back and see how they get on. I will hopefully get a leaderboard up for each round sometime the following morning.

The winner will be the person with the lowest combined score from their three best finishers. That allows upto three of your selections to not make the cut. The competition scores will be the actual scores from the golfers. So if you have Jordan Spieth and he scores 280 for his four rounds, you get 280 towards you score.

To clarify here are the rules:-

1) Select six golfers before 12.45pm on Thursday.

2) Your score will be the cumulative scores from the three best performing golfers of your six selections.

3) As in any golf competition the person with the lowest score wins. Par for this competition would be 864.

4) You must have at least three of your selections make the cut in order to win.

5) In the event of a tie for first place, your fourth best placed selection will be the decider. If there is still a tie after that the fifth then sixth selections will be considered respectively.

I pick to win. What should I being doing?

Sometimes it's more interesting to back underdogs, unfancied players, high odds and generally not be predictable and boring.

I don't care if I come first or come last, there's no fun for me in picking the highest ranked, most obvious players in there.

It's akin to supporting Tiger Woods, McLaren and Manchester United from their peerless heyday. Oops.

Perhaps we could introduce a rule next year that the OWGR rankings of your 6 players must total at least 50?

I could still just pick the 6 players that maximised that limit.

What's the point of just picking the top 6 favourites? If any of our mortgages were on it of course we would all just do that. It's not like you've stumbled on a genius system or had some inspiration. If you win, what are we supposed to say? 'Wow, great picks, really insightful stuff'.

If everyone took your approach we would all basically pick the same players and the game would be pointless.

Surely the point of the game is to try and predict a little bit of something that everyone else might not

Majority have picked Spieth and McIlroy and the like anyway. Majority have picked Spieth and McIlroy and the like anyway. Scott hasn't exactly been on all cylinders and neither has Watson. Plus who knows how McIlroys ankle holds up.

That's one option, what about 6-11? (takes you one over but cuts out the higher ranked player). There are loads of combinations, even with 1,2,& 3 on the list. All will have roughly the same mean ranking but different standard deviations and so different risk.

Having just one pick in the top 10 would make it a bit more challenging and less routine.
All very boring when everyone picks Mcilroy, Spieth, Rose, Watson, Day etc all in the one pick.

Nothing wrong in regards to that in terms of the game (and we'd rather you play than didn't), but can't be a very satisfying way to play.

We could just try the lady putt method of repeatedly picking after the event has started. ;)

Is that the same Watson who is ranked 3 in the world and who's last two results have been tied 2nd, one in a WGC. Three tournaments prior he won the Travelers, and earlier this season was 2nd in the Phoenix Open and 1st and 3rd in two other WGCs?

Can do it on the European Tour app. There's no leaderboard yet on the proper website yet though. They have only just started

THere is on the PGA website, but the PGATour website is poor.

About 40 of us have entered this competition and between us, we have only picked 40 golfers.
