2017/18 Aviva Premiership Round Three Empty 2017/18 Aviva Premiership Round Three

Post by Rugby Fan Thu Sep 14, 2017 1:18 am

Friday, 15th September

Northampton vs Bath 19:45 (BT Sport)
Worcester vs Exeter 19:45
Sale vs London Irish 20:00

Saturday, 16th September

Leicester vs Gloucester 15:00 (BT Sport)
Newcastle vs Saracens 17:00 (BT Sport) <-- This one's in Philadelphia

Sunday, 17th September

Wasps vs Harlequins 15:00 (BT Sport)

Pundits extrapolating from first round results ended up with egg on their faces, most notably the premature Northampton obituaries, and Gloucester revival claims. The third round will give us a bit more perspective on what trajectory teams are really on.

If Saints only managed to get themselves fired up for last week's match, then Bath will expose them. Still, it's Franklin Gardens, and Northampton will feel a win will get their season well underway. Worcester look vulnerable but caused Wasps more problems than expected. However, Exeter looked back in gear last week, and you'd think will have too much for the Warriors. Sale against London Irish looks tasty, as the Sharks have started poorly, and another home loss would start alarm bells ringing.

Leicester are one of three winless teams, so will be keen to show they aren't misfiring, while Gloucester will be smarting after reverting back to type last week. Saracens haven't lost to Newcastle since 2009, and will be favourites in the US. Still, the Falcons are no mugs this season but might have preferred a genuine home fixture. Wasps are top of the table, and take on Quins at home, which ought to make them favourites. Quins derailed Gloucester last week, though, so shouldn't be over-awed.

2017/18 Aviva Premiership Round Three Empty Re: 2017/18 Aviva Premiership Round Three

Post by Ozzy3213 Thu Sep 14, 2017 11:30 am

We (London Irish) haven't won an away game in the Premiership since Feb 2015 when we beat London Welsh, and traditionally do not play well either on a Friday night or away at Sale, where our only win in 'recent' memory was at the Reebok Stadium in about 2011 I think.

This therefore is a big test for us, but one that we need to embrace. Sale were poor last week against Newcastle, especially in the lineout, and I would be tempted to bench James Marshall, play Tommy Bell at 10 with Greig Tonks at 15 and spend 80 minutes tomorrow night booting the ball into the corners and trying to put pressure on from there.

For Saints, I do not understand why Paterson is even in contract, Onojaife and Ratuniyarawa offer a lot more grunt and tight carrying, we don't need the line out skills of Paterson, we have Lawes, Gibson and Ribbans. He doesn't offer anything else and makes the set piece weak.

Use Lawes in his best position at lock and play Ludlam; Gibson is a 6 anyway it would give the side more balance. Lets see what Moon can do from the bench, pushing 7' tall and 20 stone at 21 years old, he is a monster in the making. Can he step up from the Wanderers? We will never know unless he is tried.

I had quiet confidence going into the first two games even with some questionable team selections.

This one however I'm just not confident at all. It's a huge promotion  game, we haven't exactly excelled and Saracens will be punching the walls to impress especially after losing their last game .

We will need to be right at the top of our game even just to get  lbp.

On the plus side by all accounts this game is hugely lucrative and will go along way towards the refurb of our stadium  (if the reports are true)

The way you have posted the teams reminds me of a game I like to play when I am bored. I look at the matches and see what sort of England team I could make out of the combined teams in that fixture. It gets me thinking about the qualities of individual players and reminds me of the stength in depth we have in England.

For this one I could go with:

01. Obano (Bath)
02. Haywood (Saints)
03. Hill (Saints)
04. Lawes (Saints)
05. Ewels (Bath)
06. Garvey (Bath)
07. Underhill (Bath)
08. Harrison (Saints)

09. No EQP as far as I know.
10. Mallinder (Saints)
11. Banahan (Bath)
12. Burrell (Saints)
13. Joseph (Bath)
14. Rokoduguni (Bath)
15. Watson (Bath)

Welly, that's very nice of you to go with a Glaws win, but there is no chance we'll win. When was the last time we won at WR? I don't know the exact time, but it was when Leon Lloyd intercepted from Goodey; so with those names you know it was a long time ago! With the added benefit of our lengthy injury list, I cannot see anything other than a loss. I'd be more than happy with a BP.

At the start of last season Bath mugged Saints on a soggy night at Franklin Gardens with Dave Atwood leading from the front for a first victory there in a long long time and Saints will be after revenge tonight.
Looking forward to seeing how Underhill goes and there could be defensive gaps for our centres to have some opportunities.

Chiefs, Sale, Tigers, Saracens & Wasps look favourite.

Not sure how Malouf is keeping his place on the wing and why Thacker isn't starting.

Glaws team looks strong, Slater and Twelvetrees returning to WR with points to prove with the man who seemingly didn't rate them.

From what I gather Brady is still touch and go, Holmes returning from a niggle.

I'd have preferred Williams in the row and Croft at blindside. With the line-out farcically bad at times leaving Croft out is a significant call.

Delighted to see Harry Wells start.

Hopefully we see Will Evans in the 23 soon.

I agree Heaf, they seem to be overly clamping down on this seatbelt tackle.

Saints applying great pressure but their handling skills are letting them down.

We've been very much second best at the AJ Bell in the opening 15 minutes. 10-0 down and two of our forwards off injured already.

Holmes has been playing in the A league so I was assuming he was fit enough to play.

Agree on Wells, he played really well last season when he got a chance and looked good at the lineout which we'll desperately need with no Kitchener.

I would have liked to see Evans involved this weekend. Think he's a bit unlucky. Same with Thacker who was magic last weekend and still left on the bench.

You can keep saying soft but the refs have been clear and consistent. If you go over the shoulder it's a penalty. The Underhill style low chop will be coming back into style.

That's a tough 40 minutes to take.  For 25 minutes we were very much second best, Sale had all the territory and possession (think we had 9%) and they found their way to a 17-0 lead.  then we got in the game, and for 15 minutes have dominated possession and territory, but have failed to score and conceded a length of the field turnover try to go in 24-0 down.

This is the harsh reality of this league, there is no margin for error.  When we were on top our passing was slightly off which meant the receiver kept having to check rather than hitting the line full pelt and as such we never quite broke through.  This game is gone, and it wold take a massive change in performance level for us to even get a losing bonus point.

Gutted.  Thought based on Sale's performance last week that we had a decent shot at this tonight.

Watching Sale v Irish, 24 Zip at the half.

Thought I'd watch to see how Charnley goes...apparently he's played a couple of reserve games...and I read in The column in The Express where he's quoted as saying 'there's too many rules' as well as 'I get lost in games'.

Well honestly I'd love him to be a success in Union having been a favourite of mine for Wigan, but bless him he's really struggling to read the game and you can see that he's having to think so much that the game is passing him by.

I hope it all turns around for him because otherwise on this showing I can see him being made to look silly by better sides than Irish.

The Samoan Kiwi League chap on the other hand is a poacher extraordinaire who at the this level is having a ball, and 2 try's to boot!

So glad he chose to play for England........

Brilliant, we just knocked on 3 yards out in front of the posts!

I thought they'd sorted out the handling when we beat Quins but it seems we're back to fumbling all the time

This is nuts, we've spend the first 10 minutes of the second half camped in their 22, but they have look the more likely side to score. That sums up our handling.

Rough night for Bath. Joseph has had a stinker and there's no go forward from 9 now Kahn has gone off.

Worse Underhill is now down and looks unconscious. Looks likes he's come round but that looked nasty.

Strong performance by Sam Underhill - 23 tackles - but he's down injured now, and it's taking time. He's finally walking off unassisted. It's not a head injury assessment, so might be his neck.

Another impressive display from the Northampton forward pack. Mallinder really is a poor 10 though.

Bonus point for Saints as North goes over with five minutes left.
