Cook Hits Back at Atherton

London, June 28 (IANS) England's cricket ODI captain Alastair Cook hit back at former skipper Michael Atherton after the latter criticised his batting style and fielding capabilities.

Atherton described Cook "a plodder at the top of the order" and "a bit of a donkey" in the field.

Cook retorted saying "it takes one to know one, I suppose".

Cook has been a prolific scorer in Tests but has often been criticised for his strike rate in the limited overs format. The southpaw has scored runs at a strike rate of 71.39 in 26 ODIS and has played only three games in the last two and a half years.

Mark Butcher was questioning why he was made capatin of the one day side ewhen he isnt even secure as one of the top ODI batsmen, infront of Vaughn. Its just a pity they didnt have Boycott in for that discussion.

I suppose describing journalists as buffoons is better than describing players as monkeys. Its hardly a cutting iinsult, or unwarrented.
Same goes for the Cook thing, classic peice of journalists doing a hatchet job and taking things out of context followed by someone who wants to have a go blowing it even further out of proportion.

Strange from Atherton. I didn't think he did the tabloid style comments.

He didnt. The tabloids simply take the comments and make them into shock stories then throw them back to a player out of context. The player then has to respond, which he did jokingly. It tehn gets reported back as if its the most shocking thing to ever happen (slow news day) and the inetrnet gets its knickkers in a twist.
Journalists are buffoons, people who take these articles and exagerate their meaning and improtnace in their own minds are too.

So the quotations from Atherton are not actually what he said?
