Should Richard Parks be knighted?
Sir Richard Parks?
Simple really. Should the big man be knighted? My feeling is yes. When people like Bruce Forsyth are being knighted then someone like Richard Parks really should be for giving so much to a very worthy cause.

He should get knighted. I doubt he will get knighted as to be honest his 737 challenge doesn't really get that much press coverage even though it is one massive feat and for charity

Re: Sir Richard Parks?
I reckon he should get knighted, but I doubt he will, I think what will happen is that he'll get an MBE. When you think about what he's in the process of achieving it's just incredible. Just what a guy.

Re: Sir Richard Parks?
It's a fine thing he's doing but I don't think he deserves to be knighted. Lots of other people have raised money for charity.

True however
737 Challenge Website wrote:In December 2010 Richard started the unique, multi discipline 737 Challenge. A gripping 7 month expedition to climb the 7 Summits, which are the highest mountain on each of the world's continents, and venture the last degree to The South Pole and Geographic North Pole. All against a 7 month clock!
If Richard is successful he will become the first ever person to stand on the continental summits and all 3 poles (The South Pole, The Geographic North Pole and the summit of Everest) in the same calendar year, and set a new benchmark in the climbing of the 7 Summits.
7 summits, 3 poles, in 7 months. A world first.
That is surely that is worth real recognision, after all that is real old time adventurer stuff.

Please. Here's the thing. The man is doing a World first and has had to overcome the near loss of a toe and falling down a crevasse on this mountain. If you don't agree with a knighthood then fine, but please don't try telling me that what Parks is doing isn't historic and worthy of recognition. Other people do charity work aye, but we aren't talking about a one off event or growing a moustache here (though Parks' moustache would be epic at the moment). Either you don't appreciate what Parks is doing, or you're being fairly ignorant.

Re: Sir Richard Parks?
Whats he done this in aid of? This is actually first I've heard of it. Sounds amazing.
Re: Sir Richard Parks?
Most definately. He is making history and doing it for a worthy cause. The guy has spent all of his life savings on this, which is unbelievable considering they had raised just 40 odd thousand a few weeks ago. Criminal. Needs more media coverage!

I didn't say it wasn't worthy of recognition. I just said it wasn't necessarily worthy of a knighthood.

SafeAs - to be honest the way your post read you were comparing it to having a sponsored silence or something equally simplistic.

Not sure why it came across like that.
Anyway, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one chaps.

Rev, neither you just said it was the 737 Challenge but I just smiled and nodded along. I couldn't remember exactly what it was.
McKay, Rev was wearing a white dragons shirt which promoted that guy.
Fair play to him an amazing achievment.

Re: Sir Richard Parks?
Plus I've done nothing but mention it on the pub thread Stag, everytime something of note happens.
McKay, when the Dragons played the Blues they wore one off shirts (white) to raise money for Parks. I ended up buying one (Ben Castle as it was cheapest). Most went for £200 plus. I think Faletau's was the biggest earner at £560 or so.
Safe, I'm sure you meant nothing by your post, but as I said what Parks is doing is incomparable. I don't know about Knighthood either, but he should get recognition.

Rev, geneuinely I didn't know the details. I knew the gist of it but didn't know all the exact details.
Re: Sir Richard Parks?
Seriously Stag, it's been mentioned in the pub loads, how have you missed it?
Just such an amazing achievement if he manages to do it. Just one peak to go now.

Well I'm pushing for a knighthood for him. If Brucie gets one then someone who has actually acheived something should definitely get one.

Why shouldn't he get a knighthood? Sir Clive Woodward got one for 2003 and he didn't even play!

That's alright Stag. It shows though, that every so often I do say things that are worth listening to. A rarity I know, but every so often there's a good post ;-)

Should he be knighted my Arxx! The guys done something he wanted to do for himself and has probably had a lot of fun doing it - The fact that there's a charity element is always secondary in these things. How about knighting some of the real workers in this country instead of the egotistical sensation seekers. Look what Botham did for charity yet the guy remains an absolute pig of a man.

Re: Sir Richard Parks?
Well whether he is doing this for himself or not he is trying to get £1 million for a cancer charity. So there's still a winner either way! Knighthoods always seemed a bit hit or miss to me anyway, I mean did Brucey set out to entertain us to better the nation, no he wanted to get rich and famous!

What Parks has done deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the feats of Sirs Ranulph Fiennes, Edmund Hillary and Chris Bonnington. They were considered worthy of the award.
I don't know what people think he should be doing more of to earn a Knighthood.

I can't believe how much your trivalising the amount of shear effort, guts and determination someone has to give to do something like this - especially if it's true what Dominic Dicoco said - that he gave up his life savings to do this. And you make it sound like he's taking a holiday while at the same time soaking up the glory and alduration - even though there's been hardly any press coverage, and barely anyone knows about it.

I think he's also promised to live on bread and water for the rest of his life
If you lot want to eulogise here, carry on - I'm begging to differ to far more worthy individuals who receive even less attention than Richard whose expensive exploits I can see you all enjoy,

Parks is undertaking a great feat, which he should and I think will be awarded for. I doubt it will be a knighthood though.
In comparing him to the other knighthoods you listed above, I would say that the difference was that they conquered new ground. Parks is undertaking something that has been done by people before, but not attempted within the same timeframe. Mike Stroud for instance, who got Fiennes to accompany him as the first to run 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days, raising millions for the British Heart Foundation, hasn't been knighted.

True, but the problem with conquering new ground is after a while there's very little 'new' left.

Yeah, you either have to be really inventive, rely on new technology or do the nasty stuff people couldn't be bothered with before (like Ed Stafford taking 2 1/2 years to walk the length of the Amazon, which he completed last year and hasn't been honoured for at all yet).

Hey, what about Ceri Sweeney !
I love the brand of rugby the dragons play, and im a osprey fan, since the Blues or sorry wru got rid of the warriors, but it think you will find both
Parks and sweeney hail from the house of pain in ponty, and were not produced by the dragons.
Parkseys acheivment is monumental but no such acolade will be given to a welshman, if it was a ex english international im sure it would be different. even as far as more media coverage gos it would be alot bigger, the coverage was rubbish, but hey you cant take nothing away from the guy well done Rhichard

I think it's an incredible achievement, but sadly am not sure that it will be recognised with a knighthood or similar gong as I'm not sure it's been promoted enough to havecaptured the national conscience - but that takes nOthing away from his record
