First topic message reminder :

Chris Adams has named a fourteen man squad to face the Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 3rd August.
Chris Jordan and Gary Wilson come into the squad to replace Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker, both of whom are unavailable through their involvement with the England Lions, who are taking on Sri Lanka A in a four day match in Scarborough this week.
also included in the squad mark ramprakash.
with only 3 seamers it seems certain jordan will start.
The full Surrey Lions squad to face the Northamptonshire Steelbacks at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 3rd August is:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (Captain)
Steven Davies (Wicket Keeper)
Jason Roy
Tom Maynard
Zander de Bruyn
Matthew Spriegel

I'm claiming a little bit of credit too. Came in from work - turned on the computer with Northants winning at a canter. Within seconds they were collapsing.... Very Happy

Excellent that we managed to win again, complete surprise to me as I thought we were dead and buried when they were 100 odd for 0. How ironic is it that we pick 4 spinners and then Hyphen turns out to be our best bowler.

The batting still isn't right, we have 4 players capable of scoring quickly and then The Brain who more often than not plays at a snails pace followed by some reasonably capable all rounders but they all seem a place too high as once again we are a specialist batsman light. Hopefully Ramps will play the rest of the CB40 games as if he played in place of one of the spinners the team would look a lot more balanced.

CF - I suppose Surrey supporters tend to think of our playing X bowlers/spinners + Hyphen because typically he hasn't bowled at all in many matches, whatever the composition of the team.

This season in the county championship if the averages on BBC website are up to date he's taken 1 for 107 across a total of nearly 26 overs - which is not altogether encouraging. But in limited overs he has several times put in good performances in saving runs - and in this case also taking wickets.

Surrey often seems to play large numbers of bowlers/all rounders in limited overs. Don't know whether it's my imagination but the more bowlers there are in the team the more likely Hyphen is to give himself a bowl. Shocked

I can see him continuing to bowl himself a bit more on the back of his recent success, but for the moment I can't see him being selected with the intention of using himself as a front line bowler so that Surrey actually plan an extra batsman.

I think it is purely down to our lack of batting options in the squad. I'd wager Spriegel, Schofield and Ansari often get picked for their batting ability as opposed to bowling but they often end up batting 1 place too high.
