Agbeko vs Mares
So then, did anyone manage to catch this one last night?
An all-action fight, with more than a spot of controversy. Agbeko suffered two 'knockdowns' that have caused a bit of a stir, with the first in round 2 being as he was already on his way down through a slip, and the second in round 11 being courtesy of a low blow. Each fighter was warned several times throughout the fight about pulling his opponent's head down (Agbeko) and low blows (Mares), with many feeling that a point or more should have been deducted from Mares, and the end result being Mares winning via majority decision.
A good fight, and expect a rematch.

Re: Agbeko vs Mares
not seen the fight, but read about it. from what i hear mare was going low in responce to agbeko pulling his head down all the time. no sympathy for agbeko if that is the case, same when people complain of punchs to the back of the head when they keep leaning forwards and ducking there head down- if they didnt do it they wouldnt get hit low/round the the head

Re: Agbeko vs Mares
There seems to be more and more controversy surrounding boxing at the moment, Williams vs Lara. Haven't watched the fight yet but by what i've read and heard, Agbeko was robbed.
Re: Agbeko vs Mares
i heard different, apparently even without the 2 knock downs and if he had a point of for a low blow it would have been a SD in favour of mares- as i say not seen it myself yet though.

I've heard most about it on East Side/Boxing News 24 not the most reliable Boxing sites so will just wait till I see it.
Re: Agbeko vs Mares
yeah same, unfortunatley my internet is out at home and cant watch videos at work so will have to wait for a few days before i get to see it- heard it was a good scrap regardless of the controversy though.

Re: Agbeko vs Mares
Was a good fight, Mares got away with a lot of low blows and Agbeko got counted after he went down from a clear one later on in the fight. A rematch would be best i think although i still expect Mares to win. He had his knees dipped by a good counter right from Agbeko early on but didn't seem to be able hurt Agbeko, even with the knockdowns.

That is correct.
Mares deserving winner, but left a bit of a bad taste, so a rematch is definitely in order.
Re: Agbeko vs Mares
Not even worth talking about the fight, the refereeing was corrupt, no doubt about it. With lenient refereeing Agbeko wins a decision, proper refereeing and no way Mares escapes a DQ. Disgraceful.

I liked it when Jim Gray told the referee he was way out of line and turned and walked away from him.

I've read about the fight but not had the opportunity to watch it, will do so tonight hopefully. By all accounts mares was fortunate with the ref being lenient on him for low blows. Not sure about an immediate rematch - my hope was that the winner of this tournament would face Donaire, which is a fight I'd be very interested to watch although I think Donaire destroys anyone at bantam and superbantam.

He showed him the punch landing squarely in the balls and he wouldn't even acknowledge it. "I'd need to take some time to look at it". BS.The Galveston Giant wrote:I liked it when Jim Gray told the referee he was way out of line and turned and walked away from him.

He was interested was he, i was suprised he didn't admit it was low after being shown twice. Seems a bit fishy, he said the glove deflected down but it didn't.

I watched it live, from what i remember everytime Agbeko got punched in the balls he got a warning for pushing Mares down.
It was picked up by Tarver etc on the commentary team and they were like WTF.

Re: Agbeko vs Mares
Ref should be banned or take a refresher course. Mares repeated lowblows should have lead to a disqualification. Good to see the Showtime team get on the refs back.
Onething was evident and that is Nonito Donaire is the best in the World at the weight.

Re: Agbeko vs Mares
Nice one, Agbeko deserves it, i hate it when they have big fights on the same night though and then you go for 3 or 4 weeks with nothing.

PPVs would get pretty expensive though wouldnt want to shell out £15 a week for a fight.

They wouldn't be shown in Britain as PPV though Two Tone, although Sky are starting to show less and less from America. It's better to have the choice to choose though rather than have two on at the same time.
