Friday fun - Nicknames XV
In a probably vain attempt to lighten this place up this afternoon, how about an international XV with the best nicknames:
1 The Claw - Peter Clohessy was a good tough prop, with a nickname to match
2 The Raging Potato - Keith Wood was a world class hooker with a world class nickname
3 The Fun Bus - Jason Leonard living up to every prop forward stereotype known to man
4 Nobody - John Eales. One of the finest ever, with undoubtedly the finest nickname of the modern game
5 The Blackpool Tower - Wade Dooley with a nickname to match his outrageous height
6 - The Great White Shark - John Jeffrey was every bit as aggressive as flanker as the nickname sugegsts
7 - Iceman - No all time 15 can be complete without Michael Jones, and his nickname is good enough to qualify.
8 - Foo - Scott (Foo-)Quinnell merits a humerous if slightly childish spot in this XV
9 - The Prince - Gareth Edwards has to be in any selection, and his nickname certainly shows the esteem he was held in.
10 - Jiffy - Jonathon Davis takes the 10 jersey ahead of Squeaky Andrew
11 - The Bayonne Express - Patrice Lagisquet would add pace to any side, including this one.
12 - The World's fastest prop - Scott Gibbs could take this spot for any of his 3 nicknames (car crash, pocket battleship)
13 - The Clamp - Alan Bateman merited the name for the quality of his tackling
14 - Alfie - Gareth Thomas with a random nickname
15 - Billy Whiz - Jason Robinson's nick tells you plenty about how he played
Quite happy for any alternative suggestions or improvements.

Was an option - perhaps we'll put him on the bench along with Coochie Chilcott.

Like 'Black Velvet', so we can put Bowe ahead of Alfie Thomas (was only put in because I ran out of ideas...)
Anyway, Ireland have done well on the quality nickname front - The Raging Potato is definitely one of the best.
I was avoiding the boring nicknames like BOD or Earlsy.

Re: Friday fun - Nicknames XV
The boks come up trumps in a nickname competition. Some of their nicknames are so entrenched that the players are universally referred to by them! (And some are pretty amusing)
eg. 'Chilliboy' Ralepele
'Bakkies' Botha
'Os' Du Randt
'Beast' Mtawawira
'Moaner' Van Heerden
'Mof' Myburgh
'Piston' Van Wyk
'Tiny' Naude

Not that the Tigers fans have trouble with the PI names or anything;
Alesana Tuilagi - Alex
Sitiveni Mafi - Steve
Manusamoa Tuilagi - Manu
Anitelia Tuilagi - Andy
Fereti Tuilagi - Freddie
Enele Tuilagi - Henry
Thomas Waldrom is know as Thomas the Tank Engine for his celebration and playing style.

I never knew Bakkies wasn't really Bakkies. John Phillip just isn't really that fearsome anymore. The best of the current Wallabies is Bam Bam for Pocock after Barney Rubbles oversized man child.

Re: Friday fun - Nicknames XV
14 - Alfie - Gareth Thomas with a random nickname
It's not random - earlier in his career he looked like Michael Caine in the '60's original.
Welsh possibilities
Stephen "Staff" Jones - prop. He was so big it looked like there was more than one of him.
Stephen "Wellies" Jones - 10 due to his running style also "Dracula"
Martyn "Nugget" Williams - similarity to Steve Davies.
Sam "Avatar" Warburton - similarity to the cartoon film characters, also "Horseface".
Barry "King" John - coined by the Kiwi press on the 1971 Lions tour - some accolade that.
Ray "eats soft centres" Gravelle.
Ray "Chico" Hopkins - looked Mexican
Emyr "Tarw" Lewis - the Bull
Geraint "P" Lewis - there was another Geraint Lewis in the Pontypridd side at the time. He was Geraint Owain Lewis. They started calling him Geraint "O" Lewis. Some bright spark decided to start calling the other Geraint, Garaint "P" even though he hasn't got a middle name.

"Ray "eats soft centres" Gravelle"
Would be a worthy back-up to the two centers in my original selection.

Re: Friday fun - Nicknames XV
I always have time for Beaver (he kicked the winning points this year after all) so he´s got to be flyhalf.
Smokin Joe Stanley with the upturned collar was too cool for school.
The Kamo Kid (Ian Jones) sounds a cross between the Milky Bar Kid and Clint Eastwood.
Matt Dunning should´ve been called Moccachino because he looked big in size but it was because of all the marshmallows inside.

I thought he was called Alfie because he looked like A.L.F. (Alien Life Form) that American sit com thing??? Just checked and Wikipedia confirms this too:
"Gareth Thomas is often referred to by his nickname 'Alfie' owing to a supposed resemblance to a character in a sitcom called ALF"

Best Rugby nickname I can remember was back in the Stone Age when Ollie Waldron, while playing for Oxford, had a chunk of his ear bitten off.
Henceforth he was known, in the manner of the day, as:
Ollie Waldron (Eaten and Oxford).

At a local level we had Dai splinters, because he was always sat on the bench and Will 18 months who had half of his ear bitten off.
