Misano Re-named After Marco Simoncelli

MARCO SIMONCELLI'S local track Misano is to be renamed after MotoGP rider in his honour.

After a decision was unanimously agreed upon, the circuit will now be called Marco Simoncelli World Circuit in tribute to the 24-year-old who lost his life in the crash at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Luca Colaiacovo, CEO of Santamonica SpA said: “We owe it to the memory of Sic, to his family and to the hundreds of thousands of fans who admired his courage and humanity, and to the many sports and media personalities that gave voice to this spontaneous and moving request. We are happy and proud to associate Misano with Marco Simoncelli, a champion in sport and in life.”

Simoncelli's trademark number 58 will also be retired after the final round. The number will be given one last race as Loris Capirossi will sport the digits instead of his customary 65, in respect of his friend in what is Capirossi's final race in his career.

The Gresini team set-up Simoncelli's pit-box in tribute to their fallen rider, leaving the message: “Ciao Marco, It has been an honor and a privilege to work with you”

All the riders are also wearing black armbands with Simoncelli's red 58 on it and the Ducati team trucks are also adorned with the Italian's number.

Series organisers Dorna have accepted the request made by Simoncelli's father, Paolo, for a minute of noise instead of silence. Every bike engine will be revved together in respect, with fireworks possibly launched at the conclusion.
