It wasn't white when it was originally built though.

It got whitewashed for a reason.

The question isn't phrased too well though, so I'll give you that.

Didn't they paint it white to cover up damage or something ?

Yeah, it did have a fire go through it... maybe it was to repair or waterproof it?

It was to make it look as though all was well with the young republic, fresh coat of white paint to cover up the black fire damage and then spend a couple of months behind the new-looking facade sorting out the interior mess.

Like the British Army had never been....

I didnt know the real reason so just googled it - quite fascinating really!
