Ricky Burns has taken to Facebook to slam a gang who threw bottles and chased him while he was jogging through his home town of Coatbridge.
The WBO interim lightweight champion also blasted local police who he claims showed little interest in dealing with the incident on Monday night.
The 28-year-old told was confronted by the group near Albion Rovers' Cliftonhill Stadium but wasn't drawn into a confrontation for fear of losing his boxing license.

Attacked: Burns has slammed the hooligans who attacked him
Burns wrote on his Facebook account: 'Out jogging tonight and a group decide to shout abuse at u, chuck stuff and chase after you.
'You phone the police and report it and they just drive by 10 mins later. It's a joke. What's Coatbridge coming to?’
Burns posted the message at 11pm which drew more than 200 comments from outraged family, including his mum Tracey.
She wrote: 'I am absolutely disgusted, not just at the crowd of hard men that were throwing bottles at my son but at Strathclyde’s 'finest' who don’t seem to care. Time to move out to the countryside, methinks.'
Burns's manager Alex Morrison was equally outraged and questioned why locals would want to cause trouble for the boxer who has done so much good for the area.
He said: 'He has never put a foot wrong and is such a clean-living boy. He has never done anything out of line so he knows what the majority of us think about him.'

Apologies for the source (I borrowed a copy from Coxy) but this doesn't seem like a very nice thing to do to their local hero, does it?

Don't say I didn't warn you though. I told you bottle throwing was a hobby, north of the border.

They are the same where I live, I was out running last year and some youths threw an egg at me from a passing car. Got me right in the crackers.

Police did nothing.

Disgraceful. They should have thrown cheese to go with your crackers, not eggs.

As for the story itself, I used to live near to Coatbridge and its not the nicest of areas.

I bet the Philadelphia low lives wouldnt have done that to Rocky (although the Fresh Prince did get in trouble in Philly)

they made 2 mistakes:

1. taking on a boxer
2. thinking they could catch up to a boxer who is running.

either way, you get these idiots everywhere. even in the country.

anyone who runs away is asking for trouble. if he had turned and confronted them im sure the situation would quickly be defused. its easy to lose your bottle though. ricky is a trained boxer not a street fighter, so i guess he just wanted to get away

You have an annual subscription, just admit it.

And when such things happen i just sit back and think that these degenerates will never be anything and have little to live for. And that's just little old me and i'm not even a world champ like Burns is who has a fair amount more at his feet than i ever will.

It is hardly crime of the century. Seem like a typical chav family who just want an argument with the police for the sake of it.

Ah yes, trained street fighters... Also translates as pub drunks who think they are solid. You would be hard pressed to find a more useful fighting technique than boxing for a street fight.

That said, Ricky did the best thing. A large group vs 1 man, who knows what weapons they may have.

It was more than likely a group of cidered up kids, who didn't know who he was. They'd have just seen some short-arse running around with his hood up, and thought him fair game.

Unless of course he goes around with "Ricky 'Rickster' Burns - Interim World Champion" emblazoned on his shell-suit, in which case he deserved it.

He'd probably knock one of them out but would then get overwhelmed by the rest of the group. Plus Ricky punches like a sissy so they probably didnt fear his power.

Sad thing is, if he stopped and done something about it he'd have ended up in trouble, losing his licence and possibly jail time, whilst the kids would've walked away scot free.

I was at the Emirates a month back, pretty much in the family stand, and some nobhead late-teens wannabe hardnut kept standing up infront of a bunch of old boys (40/50s) even when nothing was happening. Heated discussion followed, with the kid effing and blinding, and one old boy cooly eventually saying something along the lines of "sit down, or get sat down". Said youth promptly told him to f-off and stood up the next time the ball went forwards. The old boy grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and plonked him straight back in his seat.

After sitting there like a scolded schoolboy for 10 minutes the kid went off and told the stewards!! Old boy got pulled out and arrested!

Absolute joke.

I agree. The old fella should be a little more intelligent about the whole thing. Wait till the lad goes to the toilet, follow him and and sly shot him. Works a treat.

I agree with Tino. Facebook is a pointless, worthless and a boring tool.

I asked my girlfriend what she was doing on her phone last night to be told she was 'checking in at nando's'. zzzzzzzzzzzzz

All the people I like have my BB pin/mobile number, they can text/message me that way. I have no interest in what you are having for bloody tea/what you are doing at work/looking at thousands of pics from a rubbish night out.

Unless you are using for financial gain, in which case, well done.

I thought throwing bottles was a sign of affection in Scotland? Especially if they were bottles of Falkirks finest Iron Bru.

Also, didn't Rocky Balboa have a bunch of kids chasing him in one of the Rocky montages?

I think Ricky is just a little paranoid.
