WCW - Key moments Empty WCW - Key moments

Post by Bobby Roode Tue 22 Mar 2011, 12:17 pm

I was a big WCW fan back in the day and thought I'd share a few key moments with everyone. Feel free to add your own to build up the 606v2 WCW clips thread.

Goldberg debuts against Hugh Morris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YddE2VJl-O0

Goldberg ends Bret Hart career https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOWo8O9iqhU

Formation of the nWo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfQ3IH-TWVI

Hogan turns heel and joins nWo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6aRr9zhyM8

Goldberg wins first WCW title https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61duAhvfqpw

David Arquette wins the WCW title https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=427thjGNlPw

Finger Poke of Doom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOxIegw-AIo

Vince/Shane Raw/Nitro cross over. WWE buys WCW https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2bbrz_wwf-wcw-shane-mcmahon-on-monday-nit_sport

There are many many more key moments but I thought I'd leave it at that for you all to contribute. Hopefully this will create a good discussion and some interest for those ex-WCW fans and those who have never seen it before.

Can't put up any Youtube vids at work Bobby but here's another few:

The Starrcade 97 match between Sting & Hollywood Hulk Hogan, where Sting was totally shafted after the fast count that never was.

Tony Schiavone's "That'll put some butts in seats!" remark.

Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko & Perry Saturn leaving for the WWF.

Vince Russo. You don't even need a video. Just Vince Russo.

Do you think that the announcers knew what was going to happen during the match? I mean, during the build up, one of the commentators say 'This is what World Championship Wrestling is all about'!

Kanyon thrown from the triple cage by Mike Awesome through the stage only to return the next week and shake his hand.

Hogan's last appearance when Jarrett laid down for him.

The Kiss Demon.

Signing up the majority of ECW's talent to use in the hardcore division.

New Blood vs Millionaire's club. Probably WCW's last roll of the dice to create new main event talent and generate new interest.

Anyone and everyone being a member of the NWO.

Sid's brutal leg break.

Rick Rude appearing on Nitro live and clean shaven, and on a pre-taped Monday Night Raw with a beard on the same night.

Dean Malenko return and win's a cruiserweight battle royale to face Chris Jericho.

The Shockmaster Debuts

Tony SHiavonne giving away the results from Raw on Nitro causing almost everyone to change the channel to see.

Not alot of positive examples there but memorable none the less.

They must have known the outcome - that Sting was scheduled to win after a restart - in order to sell the story of the match. If I remember rightly, at the end Schiavone's screaming about there being a fast count even though there obviously wasn't.

It was a daft idea to even think about a screwy finish like that anyway, the match should have been Sting whooping Hogan's ass then winning clean.

But then Hogan would have had to put someone else over clean. At least he can say he was unprepared to wrestle and had already had a match that night Erm

I think the poster was talking about the Fingerpoke of Doom? Schiavone definitely said that line just before Nash laid down for Hogan and the company began to fall apart.

The Sting-Hogan match was, in my opinion, when it all started to go wrong.

The NWO had been ruling the company for over a year, destroying all the babyfaces. The Sting-Hogan match had been built up so well and WCW finally had a huge babyface to oppose the juggernaught. After watching face after face succumb to the NWO, the fans wanted a happy moment. Sting should have beaten Hogan clean.

If they wanted to get a little more juice out of the NWO, they should have had Bret team with Sting at the start of 1998 to banish them for good.

Instead, the NWO was never really defeated, Bret's potential as the top babyface was wasted, and in 1998 WCW went from distant number one to distant number two. It was only Goldberg's title run that delayed the inevitable.

Rather than ending with a whimper in the Spring/Summer of 1998, the biggest heel faction in history should have been banished a few months earlier while it was still hot. The War may have ended differently if that had been the case.

Not exactly a "landmark moment", but The first ever match of WCW NiTRO- Jushin Liger vs Brian Pillman. It highlighted the differences between WCW and the WWF at the time, with WCW focusing on the action in the ring as opposed to the WWF's cartoon-esque gimmicks etc etc.

Lex Luger showing up on the first Nitro was pretty monumental too.

One thing I was watching last night was Kevin Nash cutting a promo and Mike Awesome attacking him whilst still ECW Champion, signalling the beginning of the New Breed v Millionaires club.

I found Lugar incredibly repetitive in the ring. I remember watching him fight Flair at Starrcade. The crowd were great that night but once Lugar had used all his moveset, he just started over again in the same order.

I didn't like Luger either but it was more for the impact of it and it sent out a signal to the world that WCW was coming for the WWF.

That they were taking a guy down who never made it big in WWF?

Surely a flare or a bat would've been better?

The shock value of it KB, the shock value.

Granted it's nowhere the level of:

"Our partner is gonna SHOCK THE WORLD.....because he is none other than THE SHOCKMASTER!"

"THE SHOCKMASTER YEAH! ALRIGHT!.................oh God"

but it was still shocking! Smile

Also i know a lot people don't have much time for Easy E but him putting Nitro live helped kickstart wrestling again.
