All Black 1905 jersey for sale

Sadly my local club is going through some real stress at the moment, We are being forced to sell our most treasured possession an All Black jersey from the 1905 tour match against the All Whites. Any rich kiwis who would like a piece of their history back?

I could go to 50 quid if there was a fund raiser.

It'sa shame you never had the NZ shirt from the Wales game, it wa the only shirt NZ wore with Sour Grapes rather than the Silver Fern!!

It probably is the same one, there were updated editions coming out for most of the '80s as I recall. And there was a companion "Men in White" edition with scorecards for the NZ cricket team.

My brother has the 1978 book, he got it when we were in NZ years ago.
There is actually a wealth of information in it.

How much does the club actually need?

Well due to Minties genius, NZ TV stations picked up the story and are trying to do a satelite linkup with the BBC so it should be appearing on NZ telly as well as Welsh I guess pretty soon.

There is no number on the back, the chairman has sent me some images which I will post when I get home tonight. Apparently the shirt is tiny and as far as we know it was one of the backs. The shirt was given to the club in the 60s by the All Whites player who was given the jersey after the match as he was a Tycroes boy. I believe he was a winger so if he got it from his opposite number it would narrow it down to two names I guess.

The images are really very good though and I will let you all see em this evening.

Wow, that's brilliant! I was going to email the bloke I was in contact with at Stuff to see if they could get a response out of the NZRFU....looks like it will go further into the consciousness of NZ, which could attract some real interest!

Could have been the great Billy Wallace or Duncan McGregor in that case. If it's Billy Wallaces then the value would be even more....one of the first stars of the AB's and NZ's fastest man at the time (I believe).

I have a book that I have lent to my welsh neighbour on the 1905 tour and dammit, it has the team lineups for every game and who scored etc. I will have to get it back!

Sounds a bit careless to lose £18000 pounds on a summer concert.

According to my neighbour the jersey is pretty small but I doubt even all black fans can tell me who was the tichy one on the side. unless everyone was tiny, I know my grandad was virtually a midget but played top level rugby in the 30s and 40s so who knows.

I do think it says somthing that only one poster came onto this thread and tried to be funny and wum. Shame on him.

I heard from a friend that the museum of rugby in NZ are interested and following the story, but are unlikely to bid due to having one of the 1905 jerseys already and being a bit cash strapped currently.

I thought it was reassuring that the right sort of people seem to be aware and following the story, so I continue to hope it works out.

Ive just seen the 5 minute segment that TVNZ (close up)has done on this story,and the interview with your club chairman Clive Hanham,that looks like a comfy little bar you got there.
It was mentioned that there are 8 of these jerseys,4 are in New Zealand.

Well I think were about 15k out of pocket at the moment Grey but no I got back late from work tonight and didnt have a chance to pop up the club. Clive is my neighbour so I will let you know as soon as I do.

Its a great little place Laurie, that was the lounge bar Im assuming but we have a bigger public bar as well. The irony is that the team is currently doing really well in our centenary year and pushing for promotion and hopefully going to win the division which would be agreat result but a bummer if we fold.

ITs not one of the oldest clubs in Wales or even one with the most prestigous history but its one of the small clubs that produces junior and youth players who go on to bigger teams. Weve had a couple of players go on to win caps after moving up the ladder so to speak. Having spent the last year researching and writing a history of the first century for them I would be gutted if it ends up as an obituary instead of a celebration.

just got an e-mail from one of the committee, we think its John William Steads shirt. auction not arranged yet.

Personally I think 606v2 members should sponsor Tycroes club to keep the shirt. It's only going to take a dozen of us to chip in a grand or thereabouts.

We could do this on the proviso that they play every game for the next ten seasons wearing shirts bearing the motif "Strettle : It WAS a Try."
