Chris Cairns' defamation suit vs Lalit Modi is underway

From what Ive read so far it sounds like there is some serious smoke around Cairns, although I suspect he may win his action anyway as it would be extremly difficult for Modis team to prove the accusation correct.

Its pretty much a given that match fixing was rife in the ICL. If it were a Pakistani being accussed I think we'd all assume he was guilty.

Modi didnt just invent this rumour himslef either, Rod Marsh had already refused to have anythinmg to do with Cairns because of it before the tweet.
Theres evidence he took payments for large sums of money from a diamond trader he had no contract with.

A big stink around him, but no proof.

Well if that turns out to be the case PSW, it will be a sad day for me. As a child of the 80’s and 90’s Cairns was a big hero of mine. A world class player in a fairly average team.

Doesnt mean it wasnt true, just that Modi couldnt back up his allegations with hard evidence.

Id like to see what evidence was offered and if Cairns does have good explanations for the cash etc.


Id naturaly side against Modi in anything, but I dont assume just because he won the libel case that Cairns is entirely certain to be clean.

Modi had to show evidence that Cairns cheated, Cairns didn't have to prove that he didn't which I admit leaves the door somewhat ajar.

Modi couldn't stump up hard evidence and even his main witness, Andrew Hall admitted that he thought Cairns was being set up by the Indian players in the team.

I really dislike that Modi and am so happy for Cairns that he has won this case.

Modi and all his witness' could not prove that Cairns had cheated so in my eyes he is innocent. Great stuff

People just have to admit that New Zealanders are not cheats or dishonest, we take others for their face value and expect them to be like us,therfore it hurts us more when others accuse us of something which we are not.

Yepo despite the ICCs anti corruption officer and a number of his teammates saying he did it, there being specific matches that we know were fixed, that he has unexplained payments form people involve din match fixing, there is not sufficent evidence to prove he was involved in match fixing to the point you can legally say he was on twitter.

Fair enough, innocent in my eyes.

We also have the 3rd highest rate of violent crime in the OECD mind you (sadly mostly due to high domestic violence rates). So a Kiwi is far more likely to hit you than rip you off
