Roddick announce retirement plans

Post by Stealth Maestro Agro Love on Fri Apr 01, 2011 11:47 am

Former world number 1 Andy Roddick has announced his retirement plans following his slump in form and first round defeat at Miami.

Roddick said he wished to leave the pro tour to concentrate on family life, but hasn't ruled out going into coaching or punditry. His plan is to have a last hurrah at the World Tour Finals before hanging up his racquet at the end of the year.

"At the end of the day, I've won a slam, been world number 1, and i've been playing for over 10 years" said Roddick, "I've enjoyed every second of it, but I feel the time's right to move on, do new stuff, face new challenges, and relax with my family."

Former rival Lleyton Hewitt was the first to pay tribute: "Andy's been a great professional, a great player and he's also a good guy, I wish all the best for the future. It's a shame he's going before he turns 30, but if he feels it's time to go, it's time to go".

You can find more news and reaction from Roddicks fellow pros on the ATP site, and i'd be interested to hear your reaction too. Sad day for Tennis! Crying or Very sad

Perhaps for Andy Roddick it was more about the winning than the enjoyment of playing the sport, although he does say he enjoyed every bit of it. He certainly added some character to the game.

Roddick is not one of my favorite players, but he has contributed a great deal to the game. I think he would be a great pundit and broadcaster. It is interesting now where USA tennis goes from here.

Well played. My friends from London would say I've been done up like a kipper
