The 606v2 Title : Your Top 5's please : Heavyweight - Lightweight
The 606v2 Belt - The only one that matters
We're all fed up of the plethora of sanctioning bodies / belts that are ruining the game to the extent where nobody really knows who the 'champions' are any more.
So, to decide it once and for all, I'm going to introduce the 606v2 Championship Belt, and as it says at the top there, it will be the only one that matters.
We will follow the model that The Ring used to use; there are only two ways that a boxer can win the 606v2 title : defeat the reigning champion; or win a box-off between the number-one and number-two rated contenders.
Champions will lose the title in the following circumstances :
1. The champion loses a fight in the weight class in which he is champion.
2. The champion permanantly moves to another weight class.
3. The champion does not schedule a fight in any weight class for 12 months.
4. The champion does not schedule a fight at his championship weight for 12 months (even if he fights at another weight).
5. The champion does not schedule a fight with a Top-5 contender from any weight class for two years.
6. The champion retires.
So, to get started we will need our rankings, and this, good people of 606v2, is where you come in.
I will need everyone to post their top 5 current fighters in each division, I will leave this open until Friday 11th May at which point I will collate the results and publish the initial 606v2 rankings.
We will start with the following17 9 weight divisions.
Viva la revolution!
1 Heavyweight
2 Cruiserweight
3 Light Heavyweight
4 Super Middleweight
5 Middleweight
6 Light Middleweight
7 Welterweight
8 Light Welterweight
9 Lightweight
10 Super Featherweight
11 Featherweight
12 Super Bantamweight
13 Bantamweight
14 Super Flyweight
15 Flyweight
16 Light Flyweight
17 Minimumweight
Over to you then, top 5's please.

All 17 weight divisions?? If we're taking the time to clean-up the mess of multiple boards and belts etc, would it not be good to cut some of the belts out too? (particularly the lower ones)

Good point TH, I wish I'd said something like "We will start with the following 17 weight divisions, although as many may struggle to name five light flyweights we may end up abolishing some of the lower weight divisions as time goes on. Viva la revolution!" now.

Re: The 606v2 Title : Your Top 5's please : Heavyweight - Lightweight
Its a good idea but might be a bit easier to do it one division at a time. Maybe one per day? 17 divisions in one go will be pretty time consuming and you mightn't get the response you would if you did them individually. Will be a bit longer before you can publish the results but just an idea.

Ok, it is a bit of a big ask, we'll just do HW to LW for now.
(Apologies to anyone who's spent any time compiling their top five Super Flyweights!)

No worries. I'm sure people will respond its just pretty time consuming.. Least I hope they will would be good to have our own rankings. Only one man could take on a mammoth project such as this so good luck if people do start responding..

I dont think Kessler is campaigning ast SMW anymore, or Guerrero at Lightweight for people including those guys in the respective divisions.

I asked Guerrero what weight he would be campaigning at in the Q & A and he said anywhere he could get the fights so I wasn't sure where to put him in. My problem here is he is too good not to be in any of the rankings but he hasn't achieved anything outside of Lightweight so you can't really rate him anywhere else without having fought there. With Kessler do you know if his stay is a long term one or just testing the water?

I would Kessler is staying at LH. Better options for him there than SMW now and maybe the weight suits him better at this stage of his career.
Not 100% sure on Guerrero but I think his next fight is all the way up at welterweight for the interim WBC title which would make it unlikely he intends on ever coming back down to light weight. I also think he has the better options around the 140 and 147 divisions.
I agree with you on the ranking it can be hard to place fighters divisionally that move around so much.

I might have to add a 6th to each of the divisions in case some people can't be counted as they move up or down, I've also rated Mayweather twice as he is the best at Welter and Lightmiddle but I'm not sure he can be rated twice.

Its tough deciding how to go about it in general. For example you have Solis in your heavy list. Ability wise I'd have him in there but he hasn't fought in over a year so left him out. Same in a few divisions wasn't sure whether to focus on simply the best ability wise or take activity into account. Being a flexible rankings list which I assume will be updated I tried to take activity into account where possible.

Thanks for the responses so far chaps.
To address a couple of points raised :
I (or rather you) will be updating the rankings every couple of months, to keep them fresh and relevant.
Fighters can appear in more than one weight division, if the people of 606v2 think Mayweather is the best welterweight then he will be ranked number one, but if he doesn't fight at welterweight he obviously won't become 606v2 Champion.

Yeah I have included Haye and Solis in the heavyweights which is slightly controversial but as both have fights lined up in the not to distant future I thought I would include them. I felt either I include them and put them in the top 5 or else I leave them out entirely due to inactivity. But as both will be fighting soon I decided to include them. Other than Povetkin who has managed to forge a somewhat reasonable career at heavyweight outside of the Klitschkos there just isnt really anyone else at the moment that I could could consider superior to Haye or Solis. Hayes acheivements at heavyweight are fairly lightweight but still manage to stack up well against the likes of Boytsov, Pulev, Adamek etc

In Mayweathers case it probably better to consign him to one division or specify he must be included in both. Looks a bit odd having him behind Ortiz at welterweight.

Re: The 606v2 Title : Your Top 5's please : Heavyweight - Lightweight
It's a tricky one, if Floyd can only be considered as a LMW as his last fight was at LMW then we can't have Paul Williams as a LMW as his last fight was at MW.
The idea is to reflect the consensus opinion of 606v2 so I'll leave things as they are at the moment. It can always be changed for the next round of voting.

Yeah its tough given the weight hopping but with someone like Mayweather its just so obvious that hes got to be at least in the top 2 in whatever division he is in. I didnt include him at welterweight for example but I dont think having him at 3 there would be a genuine reflection of what people believe.

So let's say we only rank him at LMW, then he comes out of prison back down at WW where he would be unranked.
I wish he would retire, the awkward sod.
Wish I'd never started this now...

Maybe just include a blanket rule whereby the fighter is assessed on the either the weight class their upcoming fight is in, or if they dont have an upcoming fight then base them on the weight class their last fight was in.
Thus Williams would be at MW, Mayweather at LMW, Kessler at LH etc

If memory serves me right, before Khan's 'loss' against Peterson, opinion was very split on who was number one at the weight. Given what has happened recently, would those people who had Khan at number one put him back in there, especially considering Bradley has done nothing but beat Joel Casamayor in the last 16 months?

Its a tough one but I couldn't rate Bradley in my top 5 welters based on what hes done at that weight. At the moment I've only ever seen him shine as a LWW so thats all I can judge him on. Will reassess things after the Pacquaio fight.

Stuggled with LW's as although Abril soundly beat Rios, I still think Rios beats De marco and Vazquez. Guerrera and Burns would try to keep him at the end fo their reach and possibly succeed.
