The Leicester Tigers thread
First topic message reminder :
2012/3 may well prove to be a memorable one.
For once, there seems to be (albeit not unplumbable) strength in depth, a fairly healthy squad and a straightforward, uncomplicated international season.

Purdy the England under 20 can play 13 as well.
Agree 12 is looking short with only Allen then the academy. Maybe we have confidence in a youngster or two for a change.

Nope. Didn't know they'd announced it yet, knew he was in there for the 6N.
I would like to see us progress a few more academy players ahead of next year. We will need to spend much of the spare funds on two new props to bulk out our front row options.

JWC squad was announced last week with Price and Wells in it. A Sale lad pulled out injured this week so Purdy was added. Scott Steele is in the Scottish squad too.

I suspect we'll lose an Italian prop or two to the JWC as well.
I expect us to lose about 5 to England. Two locks, an 8, a 10 and A N Other.

England squad to tour Arg announced on Wednesday.
I only expect to see Kitch and Slater in it - Ford could well go but that will be Bath's problem.

That would be gutting for him. He's been awesome since January, a real jump in performance and he deserves a cap and more to the point England need an old school enforcer with some pace to back up all the ultra mobile forwards we have.

Conversely Sam, it provides excellent opportunities for rival clubs to shoulder a bit of the burden in England's cause.

Leicester Cockers/Club vs Country issues coming up á la Man U Fergie/Club vs Country issues coming up?
It would not be surprising or unreasonable if RC didn't get into a strop as his job depends on club success.

Cockers know international recognition is what players want and that Tigers is an excellent shop window for it. That has worked to our advantage previously.

I suppose then that I'll have to defer to your wisdom and experience Sam.
But other clubs are not carrying the weight and expectation of English fans.
Shouldering the extra burden of the principal go-to club won't be borne easily whilst the financial benefits are seen to be openly distributed willy-nilly 'evenly'.
I wouldn't be surprised if the worm turns though. Although possibly not a Leicester one...

Can't see Rowntree turning players away from Tigers, he selects enough of them for his forwards. Lancaster knows better than to Poopie where he eats.
Andy "I want England to play like Sarries" Farrell however...
Immaterial, really as our recruitment drive is done and we'll only be looking to add a couple of props and a back up centre.

Tigers will be someway down the list in terms of club represenation with England this summer. We can expect to see Sarries, Quins, Glaws and maybe Saints and Wasps with more than us.

We certainly can LT, though we are sending 6 on your with the Lions. All of whom would have probably started if England were fielding a full strength side.
Slater (if fit), Kitchener, Allen, Thompstone and Flood are our possible England tourists.

Re: The Leicester Tigers thread
Flood has played a lot of rugby but that is going to leave England short. Ford is a great prospect but he's not ready to step into the cauldron that'll be Argentina. Burns will have an awful lot on his plate as well. Remember de Kirchner has spitting bile our way for some time and the whole Thatcher funeral didn't go down well over there. They'll be riled up and ready for this one.

Re: The Leicester Tigers thread
Following the discussions about whether Leicester and Leinster had set a new record for a club with 6 Lions apiece.
Not even a record for Leicester it seems. Original 2005 selection included Rowntree, White, Kay, Moody, Corry, Back, Smith and Murphy.
Of course with Woodward selecting 256 players for that tour someone else may have had more then.

Rumour on rugby rebels is Bowden is now staying. He and O'Connor did not see eye to eye it seems. Maybe we won't need to sign another centre.
Props it is then.

That's a massive improvement. I'd prefer more stripes and I'm unsure what that black stripe is (maybe It's dark green closer up)?
Reminds me on the kit from the early 2000s though that had a bigger red stripe round the middle.

It they swap the green with the white for the away kit then it would actually be two nice kits.

Just got back. I sit in the Goldsmiths stand so Tigers (as usual were attacking towards me in the second half). At the first set piece in the second half Manu lined up at OC with Manu inside him. After that though it was the other way round. I thought that Matt Tait looked really good playing at IC - certainly in attack, though in defence Armitage and Joseph were a touch porous. Good feet, good hands he looked really good there when we wqere in possession. His tackling could have done with a bit more umph. Don't think he missed any but they weren't the most physical challenges.
Elsewhere, except for a 30 second spell when he let gibson charge him down teice (first looked offside, second was given as offside) Ben Youngs controlled things well. Tom was overthrowing a bit at the lineout with his jumpers taking the ball on their fingertips. Toby Flood looked good, but overused the inside ball to Goneva coming off his wing. Watch the highlights for Flood's try - some excellent footwork as he sidesteps his way past about 6 defenders. Castro looked like a player who is leaving, crowd gave him a rapturous round of applause as he was replaced. Matt O'Connor was a peripheral figure in pre-match warm-ups and run out. Paul Burke and Richard Blaze took these.
For LI Marland Yarde was excellent. Always looking for work and deserved the late try. Gibson was always a threat at the breakdown. Garvey, after all the hype, was disappointing. At 3-3 he looked to try and drive the ball in his own 22 only to be knocked back by Allen (I think - opposite end of the pitch) and driven back about 10 yds in the tackle. This was followed by Tigers having a 10 spell on the LI line scoring two tries in the process. He then messed up a sitter of a chance to score after a Gibson charge down and eventually went off injured after failing to get a touch on flood in his try.
Fun game - but a real end of term feel and a strng diagonal wind at times made things difficult.
Watch the highlights when they come up on the AP website - some great tries.

Yeah Yarde's try was quality. Ojo's was decent to.
Thought Humphries had a decent game.
First time at Welford Rd.
Impressive, despite the result.

Oh and Geordie struggled a touch with the pace of the game I felt. The skill and brains were still there (as seen in Tait's try) but at times the legs just could not get him round.

May half coach, half play next season as we seem to have missed out on the full backs we were after. Geordie is struggling with a long term knee injury it will sadly effect his pace. The hands and the vision for the Tait's try was awesome.

Allinson has previous against Tigers (for which he was also not cited) and is not concerned about blurring the line when he gets stuck in.

I've just seen the replay and that's assault. Disgusting kick to the back of the head of a prone player followed by a knee and then a punch aimed and missed at Tom Youngs as he cane through the ruck. He should be counting the citing in months that kind of thuggery is very dangerous.

A kick to the head is stupid, he could have done damage there. There's no way Geordie know It's coming and a blow to the base of the skull can accidentally cause a nasty injury. Any word on a citing yet?
