US Open Day 7
First topic message reminder :
Matches of note:
Benneteau v Djokovic
Ferrer v Hewitt
Wawrinka v Dolgopolov
Robson v Stosur
Azarenka v Tatishvili
Bartoli v Kvitova
Colin Fleming / Ross Hutchins v Christian Harrison / Ryan Harrison
http://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/schedule/index.html?promo=subnav
Aside from Robson v Stosur there's nothing that really sets the world alight today. Wawrinka v Dolgy might be good, I'm tipping Stan the Man to win.

Surprised to see that the world no. 245 took Gasquet to a TB in the first set. Down a break in the second though so Gasquet seems to be finding his stride.

It would be no surprise if he of Tsonga never won another Slam match. Then again, it wouldn't be a surpise if they won the next 4 slams either!!
Long may they keep us 'entertained'!!

True. But I think she's going out
Killjoy Still, she'll be annoyed she's not reached the level of the past 2 matches.

Consolidated. Looks like Robson on her way out. A 4th round showing and two big wins not to be sniffed at though

Re: US Open Day 7
Robson saves several matchpoints on her serve and breaks Stosur to get back on serve in the second set. Whatever happens Robson has shown she has the big game temperament. She just doesn't yet have the tournament endurance but that will come. Let's hope she takes this form into the WTA tour events after the US Open.

I don't expect anything special this year, whilst her new coach gets to wokr - but next year could be special

And it's over. She didn't play her best, but Stosur did what she had to do but did her best to throw the match away. Good run Laura

Re: US Open Day 7
Two further matchpoints for Laura to defend on her serve.
Saves one.
Loses the next.
GSM to the defending champ Stosur. Stosur wins 6-4 6-4. Laura put on an excellent display but wasn't able to take the crucial points - put it down to Stosurs greater experience.

I am pleased that in future for those interested in seeing a Brit go far into the tournament, it looks like we will have two players to follow, Murray and Robson.

didn't Del Potro end Safins career? He's not afraid of doing it, will be a fascinating match

Paris 2009 was Safin's last match against Del Potro. Safin had announced his retirement much earlier though.
This was heartwarming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02EMSd_Rbe8

Great interview from Roddick tonight, he was asked if he thought it he was lucky that he snuck in a slam in the gap between the dominance of Sampras and Agassi and Federer and Nadal,
Roddick: what year did Pete win his last slam?
Journalist: 2002
Roddick: what year did Roger win his first slam?
Journalist: 2003
Roddick: SO WHAT HOLE ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
*gets up and leaves*
Brilliant

CAS - Just watched that particular clip from his presser.
A wonderful riposte
The equivalent of the ultimate put-down for the most annoying heckler, and one that any professional comedian would have been proud of ; not least the casual but highly effective manner of delivery.
A-Rod will be missed not just on court but in post-match interviews too ......

Absolutely - love it when he deadpans.
He usually makes me smile in his press conferences - will miss him as a character in the game, and a great competitor.

Surprised he didn't venture to suggest there was a hole but he was the one asking the question.CAS wrote:Great interview from Roddick tonight, he was asked if he thought it he was lucky that he snuck in a slam in the gap between the dominance of Sampras and Agassi and Federer and Nadal,

bb - Press conference GOAT is an apt description. He has provided so much unique post-match entertainment over the years.
I mentioned (on another thread marking his retirement) his memorable and admirably honest, no-nonsense presser that followed his SF defeat at the AO back in 2007. One journo ventured to suggest very unkindly that his handling of the interview was somewhat better than his on-court performance.
To which A-Rod countered rather sardonically : oh right, thanks, I'm glad to hear it ....great ...... so if there were rankings for press conferences .... I'd be right up there in the Top Five I guess .......
Perhaps alternative career options await him

Re: US Open Day 7
Ah the AO07 press conference.
Journo: How did it feel out there?
Roddick: It sucked!
Got to love the guy. It's pure honesty and saying things that even the most sophisticated person wants to say but does so very eliquently
