Golf course retiral plan
One course to play out your retirement on...which would it be.
The only rule is you must have already played it.

Golf Club of Newport (NY).
Little cemetary beside the 12th tee, just waiting for my ashes.
(Hopefully not too soon.)

North berwick west links or the TOC. If we can have a home and away club those two would be just perfect.

Providing I'm not a decrepit old man and can still play at a reasonable level then Dornoch it is.

Choices in my mind...
For retiring to I think I'd like a bit of the old sun on my back and I like trees on the track so either
Old course @ Vilamoura
Torrequebrada on Costa del Sol
As I prefer the surrounds of Portugal I think I'd plumb for there over that part of Spain.

Cypress Point for me I'm afraid and to the rule about having already played it.
If it really has to be one I've already played it'd have to be Ballybunion's old course.

Getting older and shorter so I think Gullane No3 with Kilspindie as a sub.
20 years ago it would have been Sunningdale Old.

But only if that stunning and very friendly cart girl still works there

I'm going to add a second rule: you must live next to the course.
On that basis, I am selecting Kapalua, and if I stay in the UK it would be Sunningdale followed by Hadley Wood (if it meant I lived in one of the mansions surrounding the course)

I played there a couple of weeks ago. It was a perfect summer evening, with just a gentle breeze. The setting sun emphasised all the humps on the course, and especially the 17th fairway (which looks like an unmade bed at any time). Walking up the 17th there, with the sun shining on the town in the distance it occurred to me that I couldn't think of any course I've ever been happier on. A 4 iron to the last green, and two putts for a birdie was just the icing on the cake. The beer tasted great, and short of getting a text from Kate Beckinsale and Angelina Jolie inviting me round to their suite at the Marine, it was the perfect evening.

Hill Valley in Whitchurch, well worth playing if you get the chance, (the old course, not the new one)
Can play extra long, in the wet.

Looks like I'll be waving at Mac and George over the bay.....The Glen for me, mind you Gullane 2 would have a shout, but views of Bass rock, the 13th and the very friendly clubhouse would just tip the balance of the scales.

I'd hate to retire somewhere that far north. Miserable for most of the year.

nonsense ray!! dornoch enjoys a superb climate - and is far from 'miserable for most of the year'. fantastic part of the world. you'd be surprised how many suverners retire to sutherland . pretty much half the population is from down your way!

Re: Golf course retiral plan
I think I would be quite happy with my own course TBH bearing in mind playing partners, friends and fact that I was involved in its beginnings .Probably still trying to break par on the day I pass quietly away.
Seriously hoping to retire this year but just hasnt gone quite to plan with property so target is next spring.
Life of the retired golfer is great around the Midlands loads of team and open comps for a few quid, winter alliance playing every course in the county.

Most of the Western Isles have had drought conditions for a couple of months.
Started the week after my visit there!!!!
Colonsay island generally has the lowest rainfall in the UK and is usually frost free. Bit windy at times though!

Parts of Antarctica haven't had rain/snow for hundreds of years but that doesn't mean i would want to live there.
What's the average temperature up in the north of Scotland during summer ? And during winter ?

Altnaharra (which is pretty far north) is one of the coldest places in the winter, and one of the warmest places in spring, summer and autumn. It's not possible to say whether a place has good weather, or bad weather based on how far north or south it is. I've played golf on the isle of Lewis in December, and been too warm, and been unable to play in Spain in January because it was too cold.
Personally, I think it's rainfall that decides whether you enjoy playing golf most of the year, rather than how warm it is. That's why lots of people on here have plumped for East Lothian - just about the lowest rainfall in the UK. Maybe Great Yarmouth gets less rain, but there's not much golf round there.

Royal County Down - for the views and the course.. but I'd not use the club house.. I'd eat and drink in the Dog's Head (also known as the Percy French) at the end of the drive into the adjacent Slieve Donard hotel.

Re: Golf course retiral plan
I'm with Jack on this one, it would be Pebble Beach for me, yes the 6hr round tourists would be a mild irritation but if you're going to be delayed on a golf course and be forced to just take in the views...well;)
Close runners up would be The Prince in Princeville and Kapalua as that would mean I'd be living in Hawaii.
If I don't emigrate then in the UK it would be Dornoch as well.

Re: Golf course retiral plan
Sorry Barragan, I'm about to break your rule so, in anticipation, I'm going to get my in first!
I love courses which make me feel that you're stepping back in time to the days of hickory shafted clubs. TOC, North Berwick (West Links), Ballybunion and Brancaster (Royal West Norfolk) are just a few of the courses I've played that fit this description.
Sorry, should've added this bit ...
So, my ideal retiral plan would include only courses that had a traditional feel to them.

Can't pick one, however ...
Winter months at Seminole in South Florida, summer months at my home course, with a couple weeks in August playing with Kwini at GC of Newport. (Still want to bring a chainsaw for a few holes, however!)

You lucky boy, hope the weather is kind to you. £14 it also is really cheap to become a member. If only I didn't live over 300 miles away.
Don't forget to pause and take a deep breathe after you have walked up to the first green!

PGA Catalunya for me. Reminded me of Sawgrass when I played it. Beating up some of those Q School boys right up until todays final round. Great course, great weather and only had an hour from Barcelona which is also a top city!,

Re: Golf course retiral plan
Retirement course eh? Well that means it would have to be fairly flat and easy walking, not too long and the right mix between enjoyable and challenging. I remember someone once saying to me that if they could only play one course for the rest of their life they would happily settle for West Hill.
It would be a links for me as they play differently every day. I'll go for...........
Enniscrone

Ballybunion old course or Woodhall Spa for me, given I've got to have already played a course.
If having played it before isn't an issue then it's Cypress Point all the way.
