Chavez Jr "Punishment"
Has only been fined $10'000, with no suspension.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
Honestly, doesn't surprise me. It's junior. Anyway, it is only weed but it is indicative of a wider problem in boxing which is that people do stupid and illeagal stuff and nothing happens.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
I think the punishment he suffered at the hands of Martinez over 11 of those rounds is the only justice we'll see.
No consistency from the governing body at all (given Dawson was fined and suspended for 6 months).

What a joke!!
I presume that because its Chavez Jr that his "weed" suppliers will no doubt cover the fine!
Boxing is shaping up to be pathetic really!
Back to the drawing board in my eyes gents!

Its embarrassing really. You can bet that Sergio wouldn't have been treated so leniantly even if he had provided a deep and heartful apology to the Argentinian people..

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
I dont see what purpose a 6 month ban would do seeing as he probably wont fight for 6 months anyway. $10k fine is about right anyway. My only gripe is that is it not applied evenly across the boxing world.
If he was caught with steroids, then thats another story.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
What would have been said had he won?
10k fine is pathetic. He got handed a 3 million dollar payday for his last fight for christs sake.
He is supposed to set examples and be a role model for younger boxers coming through, especially given his name and family history.
Smoking weed?? No.
Rio Ferdinand was banned for a lengthy period of time and hit with a fine because he was LATE to a drugs let alone fail one!
This guy is a ioke.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
Rio Ferdinand was banned because he hopped the fence when the testers turned up. He wasn't late, he did a runner and went shopping instead.
People always highlight the Rio case as being a harsh example, but in most sports what he did is an automatic 2 year ban.

Come on now. Lets not go overboard. Its only weed. How much he earns has no relevance to the amount of the fine. Better boxers have taken drugs of all description and wouldn't get the same level of vitriol Junior gets.
He is not supposed to be a role model. He is supposed to be himself and nothing more.

Its only weed? Lol its only an illegal drug which the UK were trying to put as an A class a year or so ago?
So i presume taking weed is the same as coke or heroin then?

He then turned up late and passed the test and still got worse off then someone who took drugs?
Pathetic.
There should be no drugs in sports in general. Look what happened to dwayne chambers.
Chavez should forfit 50% of his purse, be banned for 6 months and never be able to fight for a world title.

As I said, better boxers have taken class A drugs and we forgive them for it. Tapia and Pernell spring to mind. Tapia took everything known to man and Pernell was a coke head. Perspective please. Lets not go down the route that the harsher punishment starts now.
I agree it is unfair that Chad got a 6 month ban and a fine although I don't know what the fine was.

DC got banned for PED. Smoking weed has the opposite effect.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
Drugs....
Doctors and Lawers do them (according to Noel Gallagher) and I've personally known a policewoman and a male R.E teacher to have done them.
Making something illegal may act as a deterent but ultimately it's an adults right to make their own decisions.
If chavez want's to ruin his career then let him do so....that's an example in itself.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
Just because he got a harsher punishment than Chavez, it doesn't make his punishment harsh. WADA were unhappy with what Ferdinand got.
Weed is not treated harshly in any sport - 3-6 month ban at the very most, generally a slap on the wrist for a first offence. This punishment doesn't seem that far off the mark given a few month ban is not really a viable option anyway. Rio's offence, in general terms, is on a par with taking steroids - Chavez's is a bit embarrassing, but nothing really to worry about in the full scheme of things.
Oh, and Rio didn't turn up late. The tester had already gone when people managed to get in contact with him. He gave a sample a day or two later.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
Effects or no effects az, the point is that a classified drug is banned. Should not be happening, im not saying that harsher punishments should start straight away, just merely thinking that the boxing boards should certainly consider it. Time to clamp down and punish.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
'Clamping down' on drugs like this will probably be the way boxing goes, because it's the way a lot of sports go when they want to look like they're dealing with a problem but don't really want to have to deal with it.
Tennis did exactly the same thing with the whole Gasquet issue and the American woman (Nagel?) who got a long ban for acne cream. Anything serious is covered up and/or ignored.
Athletics is similar, but they're in an improved position of being able to target certain nations that nobody bats an eyelid about, and ignore the ones that bring in the $$$.

just an idea.....people who receive lenient punishments for classified substances may know too much about officials or the very fabric of the sport to punish too harshly...they may open their mouth

Good. I hope so. I hope someone comes out and spills the beans and then boxing may finally be able to get a makeover with great matchmaking, no fixed bulls**t, catchweight "title" fights etc etc.

Some offences carry a more severe punishment than others. This falls into that category. The fine is fair imo.

Re: Chavez Jr "Punishment"
The punishment should be proportianal to the offence. Recreational drugs is a grey issue in sports because at the end of the day I doubt these authorities care what athletes do in their own time as long as its not related to PEDs. But they have to be seen to punish those that get caught for appearances sake. I dont view recreational drugs as particulalry within the sphere of sports gverance. Its just an uncomfortable overlap that can occur.

Good thing is he will get a rematch with Martinez and Martinez can school him again.
Hopefully Martinez will not break his hand early in the fight and he can knock Chavez out.

Or Chavez comes out throwing bombs and clubs Martinez for a KO! Nah, can't see that happening. Same as before I reckon without the KD.
