Orlando Cruz is gay and proud!!!

Seen this in the Guardian,

Fair play to him for coming out, takes a lot of balls especially for a boxer.

Ranked in the top 10 with the WBO, seems a decent fighter too.

What is the thoughts on this taboo subject? Should sportsmen of ANY kind talk about their sexuality out loud or keep it private??

I think it's sad that's it's still such a taboo, a shameful indictment of sport and society in general.

Football is the most unbelievable given how widely it is played and how many 10s of 1000s of men are involved - still not one active pro footballer has come out.

It was refreshing to see how well rugby dealt with Gareth Thomas' revelation.

Up to them, is pathetic in this day and age we should even need to ask the question.

Its for the sportsperson to decide - I don't think anything is gained from coming out or lost from not doing it, they should be treated the same by their nearest and dearest regardless. If it somehow gets leaked, its up to us, the fans to show a mature and modern approach and treat them exactly the same as when we didn't know. Up to their peers to again, treat them as they did before, as nothing has changed. It doesn't make a slight bit of difference.

Its the misconception that gay people are these raving queers and drag queens, yes thats a part of their culture - but I know enough gay people that you wouldn't even suspect unless you asked, to know that it makes not a blind bit of difference to the perspective you should have.

Shame we live in a society, still where this is challenged.

Same as above. Shame that this is even news, but it is, and I am glad he has the courage to stand up and say so. What's nice is the reaction of people like us fans. We literally don't care, and that's how it should be.

His sexuality is irrelevant - it's what he does in the ring that matters...

Jeff, I just mean, personally I couldn't care what people do behind closed doors, but also at the same time don't want my time wasted by people who feel the need to shout from the rooftops that they have relations with people of the same sex.

So the question is relevant, as I think its nobodies business where he puts his todger, so why feel the need to tell everyone about it??

I despair of people who go around shouting about their sexuality - you rarely find people shouting about being straight, so I don't understand why do it when they're gay - unless its to raise awareness or whatever.

It really doesn't matter in my eyes, still a boxer.

It's probably just a phase. He'll straighten himself out once he sees sense.

One thing though, this will alienate him from most American boxing fans, I mean the majority are leaving for MMA anyway, but the majority of southern Americans have a rather medieval mentality about sexuality. Plus you have god squadders like Andre Ward and Holyfield who are likely to speak out about it if he makes it big....

Nothing against it personally but I would have kept quiet in his position given the sport he is in. Boxing is a very global sport and not everywhere is as open minded as we are over here, I can see this hitting his earnings which is a real shame.

I reckon Orlando knows he's crap on the inside....so it's a ruse to stop fighters coming in and clinching!!

Certainly haven't seen him in the Blue oyster!!!

Which makes me sceptical of news like this!!!

If I was his opponent I would make sure I wore special durex made boxing gloves....

for obvious reasons.

I don't think this will be an issue for him now, 20 years ago maybe, but today it would not raise an eyebrow.

The only gay associated boxer I have heard of was Emile Griffiths. In his day coming out would have been career homocide. Griffiths was a fine fighter and must have been under a lot of personal pressure.

On the contrary. It will elevate him. The best PR he could ask for. People will want to see the queer boxer fight. Some will want to see him get licked in the ring. Pity Lewis (allegedly) didn't come out as being southpaw and orthodox.

What about DLH, didn't he admit that those photos of him dressing up in womens underwear was real? I know that's not exactly gay, but it's not the most hetrosexual thing a man can do.

Does anyone think that it made DLH less popular?

With regards to comment's on if being gay is natural and whats homophobic thinking its gross is not homophobic .. Some people like to suck on a foot others would think its gross... Such is life..

And is it natural? That would depend on how we viewed sex and what its for. If its just for recreation then no its not.

If sex is a form of expressing our effections and emotions then yes it is.

Otherwise when men and women have sex with the intent of not making a baby, then that can also be viewed as not natural..

Ignorant? All power to him for liking what he does and coming out. I agree with ONETWO totally. The act of two men having sex to me is a total abomination, vile and disgusting. That is my personal view on it. Should they be persecuted for it? Of course not.

When i say ignorant folk, i mean those who think gay people should not be free to be what they are as everyone else is without being seen as any different.

Me personally, unless somone is making someone do something against their will i could not really have judgment on what they do.
