Martin Crowe
News in the NZ media that ex-NZ captain Martin Crowe has been diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of cancer. Hopefully they've caught it early and he recovers.

On a side note, I didn't know he was married to Lorraine Downes (Miss Universe 1983, won NZ's version of Strictly Come Dancing in 2006). And Crowe is head of SkyNZ Sports, which a couple of years back failed to renew the rugby commentary contract of Downes ex-husband, former All Black Murray Mexted

Like Sir Richard Hadlee, Martin Crow was one of those players that i would rush home to watch. Good luck to him, i hope he can make a full recovery.

Latest from Crowe is that his cancer is "very treatable"

Last week before the news came out I was considering a hall of fame nomination for him, based on a combination of his playing record plus his captaincy and post-retirement innovations.

Re: Martin Crowe
Once saw Martin Crowe at Lord's strike an effortless century which dragged NZ out of a hole against England. Lovely player.
He was - seemingly unwittingly - the catalyst for the Botham-Garner-Richards ructions at Somerset in the 1980s - a row that threatened to tear the club apart.
Apparently, Crowe as overseas player had been so inspirational at Somerset in 1984 that this prompted Roebuck and company to press for the sackings of Garner and Richards.

Re: Martin Crowe
A wonderful player and by all accounts a very good human being who has done a lot for cricket. I hope the latest news is true and that he makes a speedy recovery.

Terrible news in both cases, but particularly for Tony Greig, given what a pest lung cancer is. Good luck to both.

Shelsey - you are clearly a stronger and braver man than me. I regard a slight cold as 'a pest'.
Anyway, very best wishes to both. Two individuals who remain well known in our game but whose considerable playing careers are probably not sufficiently appreciated.

Another news piece on Crowe http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10842248
He's being incredibly positive in the face of adversity. The sheer number of analogies between cricket and cancer tell you he's spent a lot of time in the commentary box though!

Sad news.
That's 3 ex-cricketers turned commentators in a few weeks. Does someone want to tell Botham to go for a checkup?

Re: Martin Crowe
What about Richie Benaud? How is he doing in his retirement age? Does anyone know if he has had any health scares?

Benaud still going strong, without major health issues thank goodness. Hoping to hear him back on air tonight for Aus v SA.

Re: Martin Crowe
Disconcerting to hear about Crowe, Greig and and Jackman. I wish them all well...
Would probably be interesting to do study on longevity of cricketers.
I believe Reg Simpson is still going (not sure how strong?) aged 92 as oldest living English test player.
Norman Gordon (aged 101) is oldest living test cricketer. Played 5 tests for SA, in 1938/39 - ending up with batting av of 5 and bowling av of 40. Bowling was doing OK until he got an Ian Salisbury like analysis of 1–256 in his final test. So, probably not a front runner for the Hall of Fame thread on this board.
Wilfred Rhodes (95) and Syd Barnes (94) both reached a good age before finally retiring to the celestial pavilion.

I hear that Greig is having major surgery next week, followed by chemotherapy, but hopes to be well enough to commentate on the Sydney Test in the New Year.
