God save the queen being the UK anthem - why not use "Jerusalem"?

God save the queen is a worse dirge than "flower of Scotland" - Jerusalem is stirring and has resonance

Would love Jerusalem to be our national anthem. Must admit though, GSTQ was sang wonderfully today by the players and the crowd.

Personally I prefer I Vow To Thee, plus Jerusalem has too many religous references foe me.

I like Flower of Scotland.

Jerusalem is stirring tho as it can be cut / edited to build to a crescendo- vow to thee is not.

You do know Flower of Scotland was written in the 60s / 70s?

Her father is a Kiwi. England had the edge in singing today and on the field. Those microphones near the players when they are singing should be ripped from the ground. That hurt my ears!

It depends on the crescendo, I love the crescendo in the Italian anthem (probably my favourite), but others that have them aren't that great. For me it's more about the emotion an anthem derives, and the First World War themes in I Vow combined with Holst's music defintely trump the Jesus visiting Glastonbury themes and more turgid music by Parry. When it comes down to it, I Vow To Thee can bring a tear to my eye, Jerusalem can't.

Do you prefer a song commencing "God Save?"

I thought God Save the Queen even if not English was at least British but did you know that aside from their own National Anthem the Norwegians also sing God Save the Queen when their Queen is present.

It's about as uniquely English as Happy Birthday.

Why not sing the Archer's theme tune, now that is really English through and through

I don't really care for anthems. Ifind them annoying, especially the long ones. I'd prefer a few seconds silence for contemplation. I can't stand God Save The Queen but at least we do one verse and it's quick.

the anthems are when I usually pop the kettle on, especially if Ireland are playing at home, they have to get through about 100 formalities before they actually start the game!

I like God Save The Queen.
Don't like Jerusalem.
I do like Land of Hope and Glory.

It was a victim of its 'originality'. As the first anthem anywhere in the world loads of countries and institutions copied the Brits, using the same tune with different words. Musical taste and invention was clearly a bit lacking back in the day.

Definitely time to move on now, we can do better and more inspiring.

Jerusalem would be a confusing anthem to play if England ever had to play Israel...
