Probably 2 wickets away from winning, no point Martin coming in at 11 injured with the game gone.

yes but what i said was that KP more than others can turn a draw into a match win..

Cook sets the innings up from the off- he doesnt turn the tide due to being an opener. He has a different role- One that is just as important mind.. No denying that

Give Swanny a go; there's a left hander at the crease.

Sky saying it has stopped swinging and gone flat.

Could NZ be favourites to win now then if flat?

Why?
Is it worth risking his health? Forget him next game then.

He's world class.

The stats don't tell the whole story.

Yes, he's got a high average, but far too often for a supposedly "world class" batsman he is either found wanting against the better bowlers, (particularly spinners), or else simply isn't in the right frame of mind for the situation.

I've lost track of the number of times he's been needed to play a sensible innings to steady the ship and he's gone and got out cheaply playing a stupid shot.

I really don't know why NZ didn't just concede the match after Watling got out?

Why risk sending already-injured players out to bat? Is it a pride thing?

Hope they don't aggravate their injuries further. Shows some grit and fight at least anyway. Wagner going all T20 will give the punters a bit of a show.

Dyrewolfe , you are correct that KP often seems to get out to a rash shot...he isn't the first fine player to have this habit.

But he far more than makes up for it with his many matchwinning innings - and even the odd match saving one , surprisingly enough - and his overall record is excellent.

He'd walk into any team in the world.

The end is nigh folks. England have been superb at bowling in this match but there is a lot of improvements for the 2nd test.

Superb fielding just then from the 12th man!

Comprehensive win for England in the end ...well done Broad/Anderson /Root/Trott... clap

Hard luck for Southee to see his efforts go for nothing...

And Broad collects his final victim in an impressive 7-wicket haul. Fantastic effort! clap

Great contributions from Anderson, Finn and Swann and a great performance from England in the field too.

Batting probably still needs some work, but in the end small totals were the order of the day for this match.

Maybe, but as I recall England kicked him out a while back, for being a disruptive influence... Wink

Also makes you wonder why SA didn't pick him, if he's that good. I certainly wouldn't put him in the same bracket as, say Jacques Kallis.

A fabulous bowling performance from England, led from the front by Stuart Broad who has been taking some criticism of late, and a chase that looked like within range, has ended up as an outright disaster for New Zealand. I think its fair to say England weren't at their best with the bat in this game, but the bowlers compensated more than enough, and they end up winning a low-scoring match by no less than 170 runs. Brilliant start to the summer.
Joe Root continued to show maturity beyond his years, Jonathan Trott offered his usual solidity, and Broad, Anderson and Finn found themselves among the wickets.
Ones Kevin Pietersen is back, the batting will be all the more versatile and quality. Of course one of England's best batsman, one of the best in the world today, could become more consistent. Had Bradman been a bit more consistent, that average could have been in 3 figures. But KP would make this batting unit a much better one.
But I do have hopes of young Bairstow. And I feel the criticism of Nick Compton, who scored back to back tons in New Zealand besides providing a few decent starts in England's series win in India is quite unfair.

I think most of us disregard Compton's tons in NZ because the wickets were so batting friendly. But hey he did better than our other batsmen so should we judge him unfairly.

I just haven't seen anything special from him. That spark , that x factor- like we have all seen in Root.

We are pretty demanding i suppose and rightly so. We are a good test team.

The X stands for something extra. If everyone has that X, then the X won't have a meaning. Root is of course a fine talent with a fine temperament and maturity beyond his years. But Compton is someone who has been hardened by the demands of county cricket and looks like a player who understand his limitations and plays within that. He was adequate in India and quite good in New Zealand. I don't think the entire series was played on flat roads, and England often needed Steve Finn the batsman to bail them out of trouble. Compton doesn't look all that stylish, but I think he has done enough to earn for himself some persistence and trust.

To be honest I think England are correct to stick with him. Nothing I've seen from Finn, Bresnan or even those on the outside suggests that they are likely to do a markedly better job than Broad is. Finn is probably more out of sorts than Broad at the moment.

See what I mean now?
