OWGR week 38 Empty OWGR week 38

Not a lot of great import happening with the OWGR right now... except that this weeks ranking is the final used in determining the 2013 World Cup to be played at Royal Melbourne November 21-24, 2013.

2013 WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION  is "similar" to qualification for the Olympics in 2016 with a few changes. Qualification is as follows:

*** The field will include 60 players (no cut), with eligibility taken from the Official World Golf Ranking.  Up to four players can qualify, per country, if they are in the top 15 of the OWGR.  Beyond No. 15, up to a maximum of two players per country can qualify.

*** If two or more players from a country qualify, then the country is eligible for team competition, with the top-two players comprising the qualified team.

*** The major difference between the World Cup qualification model and that of the Olympic golf competition is that England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will each be considered a separate country (for the purpose of the Olympics, those four countries compete as Great Britain). Further, the Olympic Games golf competition will not feature a team component.

NOTES:  Information on commitments is scarce at this point.  Kuchar, Manassero and Jaidee are the only commitments formally announced as far as I can see (as of September 11)

There are several competing events:  The South African Open (EUR-SUN), Dunlop Phoenix (Japan Tour) and Chile Open (Latino America) plays the same week.  With that in mind it is possible the event might not have any representatives from SAF, ZIM, JPN... or any number of South American countries.  The Chile Open is in a critical 3rd from last event in the LatinoAmerica Schedule.

BY COUNTRY -  Based on qualifications, with 4 qualified players, the United States is the only country with more than 2 players qualified. BUT unless the USA gets 4 of the players out of the OWGR top-15, they could be reduced to 3 or 2 players as well.   Additional countries might get players in depending on which of the qualified players do not participate.  Based the perfect scenario of all those qualified playing (which will certainly NOT happen), the qualified players by country are (39 countries)...

4 players - USA

2 players - Australia, N.Ireland, England, Sweden, Spain, S.Africa, Japan, Italy, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Argentina, Thailand, Scotland, Finland, Netherlands, Ireland, France, Korea, India, China, Portugal.

1 player - Wales, Belgium, Austria, Zimbabwe, Chile, Fiji, N.Zealand, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Bangladesh, Norway

OWGR week 38 Empty Re: OWGR week 38

Cheers robo,
I wonder whether Stenson will defend his SA title or go to Melbourne?
I understand that Adam Scott has committed to the WC.

Aren't owgr points also being allocated for the first time? (Not sure how that will work however.)

Any view yet on how many points the Dunhill winner will earn? Hopefully it'll be about 40, but certainly fewer than in the not-so-distant past.

Stenson is committed to the SA Open.

I knew Scott has been hinting for a while he would play the World Cup... but wasn't aware he had committed. And yes OWGR points are being allocated for the World Cup.  They will be calculated the same as WGC's... using the current OWGR for home event rating values.

Haven't looked at Dunhill in detail just yet... but just glancing it doesn't look quite like a 40 level to me... could be... maybe I'll have time to look at it tomorrow...

Being in Dunhill country at present it doesn't look like being the most pleasant stop they'll make this year. Suddenly it's got a fair bit colder and it rained all last night.
Provided it isn't too windy though, we could see a 59 at TOC or Kingsbarns given the hard fairways and green conditions.

Dunhill: quick calcs tell me 150 erv + home tour points, so depending on home tour points I'd say 34. 36 possibly. All time low for Dunhill? Nowhere near 40 in any case. Would have been nice if even one of the English / NIr turds (Donald Mcilroy Westwood Mcdowell for starters) would have bothered to show up...

Interesting stat: rory is around 50th spot in owgr points earned this year (including free points in a number of events). Very poor...

Agreed mighty,
But in the absence of a dedicated thread, NICK DOUGHERTY, what on earth are you doing to your career? The E.T. scoring shows him in with a very dirty DOZEN on Carnoustie's 18th.
Di, Come on, time to sort your boy out.

Dunhill turned out to be a middle level 36.

thumbsup

Ironic, isn't it, that one of Europe's top tournaments is "subsidised" so heavily by the South African participants? Shame.

Any reaction from the board about Paul Lawrie's comments about the Ryder Cup stalwarts for continuing to snub the Seve Cup?

Looks like he was talking about IJP, Rosie, Westy, GMac, Rors, Sergio etc.

Some very defensive tweets from Poulter, not specifically referencing the Dunhill or Seve events, but saying he needs to rest his aches and pains and be properly prepared for tournaments. Then says he's playing four in a row - presumably all in Asia with guaranteed money or appearance fees.
Poults comes across as such a two-faced, self-obsessed tosspot at times, but more likely just blithely insensitive.
But all the English galacticos are the same - guys like Donald and Westwood p1ss and moan about so few tournaments in the British Isles, yet they only play Wentworth and The Open of the six that are already there.

Seve Trophy is ill-thought out, though, GPB; concept excellent but format flawed, see comments elsewhere.
