London Calling ... Empty London Calling ...

Post by Shotrock Fri 23 May 2014, 1:21 pm

Looking for advice/opinions here ...

I'm planning a later summer excursion to London (visiting a fellow South Utican, Kwin), and we're lining up courses to play. At the top of our list are 3 we've already played and enjoyed immensely: Swinley Forest, Walton Heath, St George's Hill. We've also enjoyed Woking and New Zealand, but are not must-play repeats. Other's we've heard about and are curious include Huntercombe, Liphook, Addington and Camberly Heath. We're also looking into Sunningdale Old. If there are any other gems you think should be considered please opine away. And thanks!

Moor Park - The High course is the best course inside the M25 and the West is pretty good too.

Also Ashridge and Berkhamsted in the same area.

If your going to do the Old why not make it a 36 holer day of it and do Sunningdale New. 36 marvellous holes of golf.

A price bracket or 2 down from that and to my mind great value, what about Justin Rose's old home...North Hants

SGH I played in March...absolutely loved it.

Most of the top courses are outside London in the Surrey heathland belt, but then looking at your short list you already know that. If you're thinking about Sunningdale Old then I would recommend the New course as well, actually I think it's better than the Old.

If you like Augusta you could try Hadley Wood in north London which is also MacKenzie. maybe George would rate it as the second best course inside the M25?

Liphook's a lovely heathland-type course ... at least it was when last I played it ... in 1967...

Raycastle - yes, Hadley Wood is very nice. Particularly like the par 3 over the lake.

Hindhead also near to Liphook is a great course

Camberley Heath was very good a few years ago but I've heard it has gone very "corporate" recently and heard not such good things .. can't say I've experienced it myself though - it was fine when I was there

Why not go right down to the "ordinary club" bracket and try my own course, Sand Martins in Wokingham .. thought be many to be a real undiscovered gem in the area of much better known clubs .. to e it's significant whenever we play matches against other (better known) clubs, they all want to bring their best players because they've all heard how good it is!

London Calling?
Strummer Valley is very good; especially if you're going to live by the river.

Love it when they play that song at Loftus Rd, especially after nail biting play off semi final wins.

Looking forward to Wembley tomorrow............. now its the £130m game

If you want a hidden gem that's close to London you could do a lot worse than Coombe Hill. I might be a little biased as a member but it's a great track and visitors are always pleasantly surprised. Quite a bit closer to London than some of the others mentioned too!

Coombe Hill used to be Chez Neil Coles - my one-time boss used to disappear for afternoons when he was a member at Coombe Hill. Before your time, TM2K!
Does Coles still play?

Coles would be quite a bit before my time I'm afraid Kwini...sorry! I've only been a member around 6 years but I do know there's a load of history attached to the club. Four of the club pros have won the Open

wikipaedia says he's alive so it must be so!

A rich history TM2K, If you see a name on the Honours Boards with initials RSH, that's my old boss. Greatest story teller I ever knew. The reality usually revealed itself to be more extraordinary than the original story . . . . .

I just checked that too. Living in Walton on Thames apparently!

I'll take a look on the boards next time I'm there. Is there a specific era I should be looking for?!? Sounds like quite a character...I'd bet some of the older members would remember him!

Maybe have a look at West Hill or Worplesdon Shotrock. Both designed along similar lines to Sunningdale. Another I'd play given the money would be Hankley Common.

There's a mid-age comp at Hankley every year with a handicap cut off of 6 which I qualify for but which usually gets balloted out at 4 which I don't. My mate got a late call up off of 5 a couple of years back so I live in hope.

Couldn't argue with those recommendations Hibbz. All great tracks.
Shame to see West Hill struggling as a club. It really is a great course but they can't seem to attract new members

I've played Huntercombe years ago. I liked it, even though I struggled with the right to left holes. They used to have a strict dress code in the clubhouse, tie/cravat required, so you might want to check that. Even if you don't want to wear a tie and you want lunch - if it's nice - the staff might still bring your meals out.

Thanks all!

Hankley Common has come up in more than one conversation, so certainly worth looking into.

Had never heard of Hadley Wood, so will definitely check that out.

Jacket and tie required ... their club, their rules and as a guest I'm happy to oblige.

Hard to think of an area richer in outstanding courses than London.

East Lothian? Ayrshire? Fife?

I suppose for sheer volume then yeah the Berks/Surrey sand belt is an awesome area for quality heathland courses.

Have a look at Guildford. The oldest club in Surrey, not stupidly long and £70 to get on. Great views too

There are some nice courses in that area for sure, but they are quite uniform in character and, without exception, expensive.

I couldn't hand on heart suggest Surrey, Berks and Herts for a golf tour because of the cost involved. If you are going to be in London for a week or and want to play a game, then the I guess cost is not so much of an issue. If you want to play half a dozen games or more, then you'd better have a mortgage sorted out before you go.

East Lothian, Fife, Ayrshire, and Lancs represent much better value and a bigger range of courses to play, of different styles too.

Just as a matter of interest, I googled the Wentworth green fees - it's £360 on the West and £160 on the East at the moment. That's just too much I'm afraid.

Angus and Aberdeenshire provide a pretty mean range of courses too and also around Inverness.
